I have wrote to many message boards and no one will respond to me. I had a liver transplant way back in 1990 when I was 9 years old. I am now 24 years old, and about 3 years ago I went to the hospital because I was really sick. They took a blood test and my ALT/AST were really elevated in the 400 range. Prior to this my ALT/AST were always perfect when I had my routine Liver visit. I had to stay 12 days in the hospital. The doctor took a liver biopsy and the results were not good. I ended up having stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver. Since 2002 when this happened. I have a liver biopsy every year. And the results have not changed still stage 4. The doctor said this obviously has been going on along time.

But what I dont understand, as well as the doctor is that my blood tests are perfect, even now they are, except for that stint in the hospital in 2002. I take Prograf, Prednisone, cell cept and Immuran. I had a Liver transplant in 1990, I dont understand what happened to me, should I be having cirrhosis of the liver?? why is the blood work so perfect?? The doctor is puzzled he can't even tell me what happened. I'm hoping someone here will be able to help me. Thanks, Shane.

Hi Shane24, I a 48 yr Male I had a transplant a little over four yr now. Juat before I went in for my year end tests. They wanted a biopsy. What they told me after all the test were in I needed to start Peg. I asked them why the Biopsy was done the last one I had was my pre-transplant tests. They said they have found that peopel that have had transplants don't have show the same Blood were changes as do un-transplanted people and they they have found in the last year or so that Biopsy is the only why they can tell what the Hep-C is doing to your liver. that they have found that blood test doesn't really show what's going on till ou get in the higher stages. With a new liver they want to give it the best chance they can. They get a base line biopsy for it before the place it in your body. Mine went from no sar tissue to stage 2 in four years. I'm in week 32 of 48 of Peg. Doing good and my count was zero. So it look like I going to kick this and get back to were I was two years ago.

I'm sorry, I don't really have any advice to give you, but I just thought I'd reply to offer some support, and ask some questions myself.

I didn't know about blood tests not being reliable indicators, no one has ever told me I may need a biopsy.

I suppose it depends what the cause of your transplant was. If the cause is still present in some way, or may return - like with HepC, then maybe you're more likely to suffer with cirrhosis at a later date. The cause of my liver failure is unknown (though there is a suspicion it was AIH) so I don't know whether I should be concerned.

Out of curiosity Shane, how has your general health been after your transplant? (apart form your recent problems of course)

hi shane. nice to meet you. i'm new to this site too. i just wanted too let you know someone cares. i just want to say i'm glad your staying stable. i too stayed stable. i stayed stable for 8 years but things are progressing again & my red blood cells are starting to go high also. i have cirhosis & hepatic encephalopathy. iwent into comma 4 times between 1998 & 1999. i was told i had 2 weeks to live but then i stablelized by the grace of God. any way when i first went into liver failure my blood work was disguised by the prednisone. you might want to discuss this possibility with your dr.i wish you allthe best & will pray for you that you stay stable.
