Thought I should clarify ... this post means MOST drug companies will now cover the COST of Harvoni treatment in Alberta. It has been approved as a treatment for a long time but most drug companies weren't funding it.
Last week, coverage for Harvoni was added to the Alberta Drug Benefit List (approved for cost coverage). This means anyone on Blue Cross can now get funding. (not sure exactly how much is covered but it is usually at least 80 percent. Until now it has mostly been the larger national insurance providers who would pay and only partially. This is huge for Albertans. My understanding though is that all of us will have to be referred to the Hep C support program, and they choose who gets on treatment when, according to how advanced the liver disease is. There will be a huge backlog for a while. They did say I'd be near the top of the list
Also ...Zaxine, which is a Canadian drug that replaces Xifaxin should be on the approved list within 6 months or so. Hallelujah ... goodbye Flagyl, I hope.
