22 yo niece with ESLD

My niece has autoimmune hepatitis with primary sclerosing cholangitis. She was just release from palliative care and placed on hospice. Her MELD is 30, with an INR ranging from 2.7-8. She has ascites and fluid on her lungs, forcing her to use oxygen.
The doctors have said that any palliative procedure would kill her since her INR is so high and will not decrease no matter how many platelet and plasma infusions she has had. So she is not able to have a paracentesis to draw it off.
We have been looking into Dr. Berkson's alpha lipoic treatment, but hear that if she does do it, her insurance will drop the hospice coverage. Has anyone done the treatment with success?

Any information would be most appreciated.

shaisaunt...this is a very sad story. We are very glad you found our forum for those with liver disease and those who love them.

I have no knowledge of the treatment protocol you describe. Most in tradition western med care don't go in for potions or cures. I wonder, like themiz, whether there is any chance for transplant. We had a member last year whose wife had AIH with a MELD of 50 who GOT A TRANSPLANT IN Washington state and has done well.
