I apologize if this has been discussed, but i was not able to find much through the forum search

which are some of the top liver clinics/doctors in the world (not looking for hospitals that do transplant, i found some lists for top hospitals that do transplants)

I read some good stuff on reversing cirrhosis that was happening from UC San Diego and Saporro in Japan is,

just curious for some opinions rather then just published articles,

That's a tough question. We have had many transplant members who have had great TP clinics, and great outcomes. But no list. Big teaching hospitals, and private hospitals(Mayo, Cedars etc), and there surgeons have outstanding reputations.

Some drs suggest going out of state to get quicker surgeries, rather than dr of choice.

There has been a lot of talk about reversing cirrhosis lately..Now that hep c is easily treated, drs have seen many livers regenerate somewhat. Depends on whether your cirrhosis is compensated, or decompensated. I myself had compensated cirrhosis. After clearing hep c, my liver went from f-4, to f-0 to f-1, and full function.

Interesting topic for discussion.

I have never seen a list of very best centers, rather have focused on major medical centers that have strong transplant centers, on the theory that the best liver docs want to be where the action is.

Have you searched on medical centers doing the research? Try this: https://clinicaltrials.gov

If you put liver disease in the box, you can choose among 7 or 8 categories. You can choose countries with research centers as well on that site. That should give you some idea of where the best docs are and who has $$$ for research.

They will send you information. If the link doesn't work, just on the name. The 2018 meeting is in Paris. I am not sure about this year, if they had it already or not. You can likely read abstracts of their papers and get an idea where the smartest docs are working.

We are in Florida and my partner had a transplant at the U Miami Transplant Institute at Jackson Hospital in 2011. He was very sick, got excellent care, but it is not a GREAT program research wise. They did some research studies on the Hep C drugs, but I wouldn't say it was a center of excellence. I see a cancer specialist at MD Anderson, and that is more the like of place you are thinking of...though I am at a cancer center and don't know about the U. Texas liver programs on that campus. I was very interested in finding a specialist in my field and had about a dozen to choose from in the US...not many for sure. I travel to Texas a couple of times a year for a rare appendix cancer called PMP.

Let us hear what you find out. Could you be more specific about what particular liver problem you are seeking information/treatment about/for.

thank you for the responses,
my little brother is 18, after biopsy doc said stage 4 cirrhosis, he has elevated liver enzymes, but tests were negative for hep, he doesn't drink, so the doctor suggested to get a second opinion, so far we have changed his diet drastically, (it was not terrible before) but basically on vegan diet now,
so im basically looking to find another doc to visit,

Your brother needs to see a liver specialist. Can your dr make a referral? Just to be on the safe side, I would push for a timely evaluation. Most types of hepatitis, moves very slow. I would want to rule out any chance of an aggressive liver disease, Was your brother tested for hep B?

let me know what you find out. Do you have any copies of his tests?

Auto immune hepatitis is coming to mind...what are his liver functions labs?

he doesn't show any symptoms which i find kind of weird other then elevated enzymes from a blood test, he was feeling tired which is why the blood test was done but i don't see any symptoms, but yeah one of the reasons why i made this post, to see if anyone knows where some of the the best doctors are, travelling around to see one is not really an issue,

I honestly believe your brother should get that 2nd opinion, from a GI dr. The process is easy, and will give you a much better idea of what he is dealing with. It will also give him a heads up if there is something really wrong.. If your brother has a serious condition, a GI will get you to the proper help..
At that point, if you want a different dr, go for it..

I am wondering what your dr found, that triggered a biopsy?

elevated liver enzymes, they were not sure why they were elevated, and that he tested negative for hep, also saw an eye doctor for some tests which were negative as well, but before the biopsy he had hepatitis like symptoms, but yeah going to a second doctor soon

any chance your brother likes tylenol...did you know that acetamenaphen can cause death in large doses? it happens to teens sometimes. there is acetamenaphen in lots of combination cold remedies or pain Rx...and you can over do it and wreck your liver.

any chance?

we still have not heard what "high enzymes" means. do you have or can you get the numbers?

so liver specialists said to take it easy for the next 3 months no physical activity and the liver will heal it self, ast/alt are still crazy high 400+/300+ , however those numbers dropped down quite abit from what it was originally, they were way off the charts, doc was saying it was protein bars and protein powders threw the numbers out of whack, which is good news, (assuming she is correct)

wow, protein bars and powders...who knew. let's keep an eye on that.

and ask yourself if you are using any other supplements that might look good in the magazine, but not be healthy.

they told you to lay off booze too, right?

be well. i am not a fan of your ast/alt numbers.

Cirrhosis at 18 years old is very uncommon. In my opinion, his ALT/AST is too high, and coming down from under 1000. Protein powder ?????

in my opinion, I would need a better explanation. Is your dr saying , he has an acute case of hepatitis,
from a toxic substance? Which would be reasonable. Has your dr tested for auto immune hep?

I agree with ppm guy. I'd look for auto immune hep or something like hemochromatosis...have they tested for high iron, all the hep viruses?

That iron thing can be genetic, so not a surprise with him being young.

Urge the doc to do more. Anyone in the family with liver issues?

yeah, def keeping an eye on him for sure, he tested negative for hep. His numbers are coming down for when he was first tested last year (i don't speak to the doctor, just going on what is relayed to me) he's been to a few a different doctors already, this last one is supposedly one of the top liver clinics in Canada, going to continue with monthly tests,

he's sticking with a healthy diet and complete rest, only physical exercise is going for walks,
