Liver Transplant receipient - changes in tastes and appetite

Hello, I am a 53 year old receipient of a liver on 9/9/17 at Mayo Clinic.
First, I can't say enough of the great care I was under from the Mayo Clinic doctors and nurses at their Phoenix location. After a year of classes and arrangements, a MELD score of 26, I was put on the national transplant list. ONLY TWO weeks later I had a new liver in me. While I know this is uncommon, I urge you to research Mayo if in need of a transplant.

With that being said, I have noticed some minor changes in me. Most of them I can explain, some I can't.

I have always loved Seafood, now the smell has me gagging. Chocolate was never really desired, now I can't get enough.

Any insight?

congratulations on your successful transplant!!

We have had a couple of members, in the last few years, that had transplants at Mayo. One was one of our moderators. She would always reference Mayo, when giving advice.

You were in the ideal situation for your surgery. You had a top notch transplant team. And you were in a state that can transplant livers at a lower meld.

My hepatologist advises her cirrhotic patients to look into moving to Arizona or florida, when transplants become necessary. I live in so. California, where transplants are given, with melds as high as 40.. lower melds, obviously mean better outcomes..

I wonder if your anti rejection meds, can alter your tastes? Immuno suppressants, which i use for MS, changes my taste perception. hopefully some of our TP members reply.
