Hi,

I am based in the UK but needed somewhere to vent/question.

My father (58) was diagnosed with HCC caused by chronic Hep B. After a MDT meeting, they said that nothing could be done as tumour is too big (17cm) and is now on palliative care. No trials, no chemo, no surgery.

He was a completely healthy person up until the point he experienced some abdominal pain, caused by ascites.

He has been prescribed with Entecavir to treat the hep B.

He is currently completely fine and has been for the past 3 weeks of discharge with no symptoms other than tiredness a few times, it is painful and yet confusing to know that there is a sword hanging over his head when he looks normal and nothing can be done. He is questioning whether he can have a scan or something... but i'm not sure what to say as all treatment options were ruled out.

Is this normal for liver cancer?

Could they have made a mistake?

Can anything be done?

Sorry to hear of your fathers cancer.

17 cm is quite large. It is not transplantable. But I would think that chemo would be.

My brother has hcc. He has 3 tumors ranging from 2-4 cm. He is not transplantable either. His oncologist started him on a chemo drug called Nexavar. It is a daily oral med. he tolerates it well. He has stayed at stage 3, for the 9 months he has been on it.

I hope you can find something that helps, or gives him comfort

My partner Mike just lost is 65 year old brother to liver cancer metastasized to his spine. Nothing could be done. We are in the US. They had treated him for the liver cancer but it was doing its evil business wandering around to other sites. I am so sorry to hear about your father's diagnosis and recommend you live the next months and weeks gathering positive memories. Mama Lama
