My Father in Law was diagnosed with chronic hep b. I am concerned with him being around my newborn baby. I understand how it is transmitted but the baby will not finish vaccines for another month. I want to be supportive but also want to protect my baby.

He is saying that they can't detect the virus in his blood anymore, does that mean he is not as contagious?

The baby goes to his house 2 times a week for his wife, my mother in law to watch her. We have spoken them about being careful. We have spoken to drs. about risk. We do not know how he got it and it just bothers me. Should I not have my baby around him until vaccines are completed?

I feel like an awful person because I don't want to make him feel bad.

Hi mom123, I understand your concerns & feelings. Since you have discussed this with the drs, I would have to place my trust in whatever they have told you. If there is a risk I would have thought the drs would have addressed this with you.

I think I just want to know that others living with or having family members with chronic hep b have been safe and have kept their kids safe.

You have talked with the dr..And youre still questioning. Chronic hep b is for life, which means it is detectable in the blood. Low risk means he is still contagious. If youre not seeing a GI dr. I would schedule a consutation. Make a plan to keep EVERYONE safe, especially the baby. Getting vaccinations needs to be followed by a check, to see that immunity is achieved. stay safe

What did your dr tell you?? I would ask him to not have contact till the baby is immune. It won’t be that long. And he would feel awful if the baby got sick.

Dr said that risk of transmission was low. We don't live with him. Can people with hep b not have contact with babies?

The risk is low. But babies that are infected have a difficult time passing the virus, compared to adults. I would wait a couple months for any child under 5

I am so confused and scared. Dr said it was ok. Now I am regretting the decision.

She has had the birth dose and the second round of the vaccine does that not provide any protection?

Always follow your dr advice. I can explain things. But your dr is the person to listen to.
