Low hemoglobing and platelets

My sister has low hemoglobin and platelets from being in end stage liver disease caused by hep c. The hospital usually will give her blood but yesterday they refused and told her to come back later when it was much lower. She is at a 5 and I feel like they are just refusing treatment and waiting for her to die. Is there any way to raise her hemoglobin and platelets with supplements?>

Hi Justjill and welcome,
when I was treating my hep c my hemoglobin dropped quite a bit. when I went below 9.5, I got Procrit. if I dropped below 8, I got a red pak transfusion. I can not recommend any supplements, with your sisters numbers. that has to be done by your dr.

Has your sister been treated and cured yet?

Is she on the transplant list?

Hi and thank you for answering. She is on the transplant list, and she will be starting treatment soon. I will have her ask her doctor about both of those. The hold up is, she is waiting on her disability to be approved and she is going to a county hospital. They do as little for you as possible and I am trying to keep her alive until she can get some help. It is very frustrating.

do you have the hgb numbers correct?? Are you looking at RBC, or HGB ?

Your sister is getting treated soon, which can make her feel better, and possibly lower her meld.

She has been evaluated by TP unit,and listed for transplant.

My brother has cirrhosis and liver cancer. He had Medicaid in the beginning of his journey towards transplant. Approvals come slowly, and can seem to be lack of caring. He now qualifies for Medicare and not much has changed.
