As you go through this initial "shock" of learning that you have Hep C, educate yourself with the wealth of information that is available on-line as well as a variety of books. My Dr. told me from day one that Hep C comes from tainted blood from another person...not sharing glasses, utensils, shaking hands etc. , but blood on needles, blood transfusions, etc. (I have been in a monogumous & sexually active relationship for 20 years; he has been tested and has no sign of Hep C)
Depending on the severity of the damage to your liver, you may be eligible for the new treatments. Ask your Dr. to explain the meaning of the blood tests you have, especially the ones that are outside of the normal range. Arm yourself with knowledge, start a log/journal in a 3-ring binder so you can compare progress or changes.
It's not the end of the world, you just have to learn to be kind to yourself and to your liver.
I understand about not wanting to tell anyone. I felt like a leper, but eventually the disease progressed and I had to tell my family. I have never disclosed it at work or even with casual friends. No one's business but yours-no point in adding fuel to the fire.
Obvious from this chat board, you are not alone. What remains to be seen is the impact of the Vietnam war. The pros predict that Hep C will be rampant and far exceed HIV. There's no sure cure, YET! But new treaments are forthcoming according to bio medical researchers. Hang in there.
