My sister in law has newly diagnosed acute hep b and hep c.She has not started any treatment. Her major symptom is severe joint pain and swelling in her wrists and hands. Is this typical of hepatitis infection or is it something else? Will treatment of the hepatitis help her? Is there anything she should ask her doctor for when she sees him?

well,the acute hep b may go away,,there will be new blood work at 6 mths that will confirm whether her body has kicked the hep b infection on its own. Im not sure how her liver function is,so I dont know about treatment. Maybe you should go to her GI dr with her and ask some questions. I know this doesnt help much but at this point the best thing to do is ask questions,ask questions ,ask questions,,,thats what the drs are for and if they dont have the time or want to answer the questions,she should find one that will,,,,good luck

Joint pain and swelling is more indicative of arthritis. It is not a symptom of hep C. The primary symptom for hep C is extreme fatigue. Also, it takes years for symptoms to develop. I do not know about hep B, except that bilirubin is high and eyes and skin turn yellow. I test positive for B because I have the antibody. I apparently contracted it, but my immune system overcame it--but not the C.
