Just wanted to give everyone an update. The pharmacuetical company that makes the new cancer drug Nexavar has gotten approval for my husband to start using it. It's the drug that is already approved for kidney cancer and they had a trial for liver cancer that liver trial was stopped early as it was working so well they started giving to all the participants. My husband should get his shipment on Tuesday. This couldn't have come at a better time. We were losing all hope. I know that this isn't the cure all but it's his best shot at survival at this point. Pink, can you tell us how this drug is used? Is the purpose to kill the cancer, prevent recurrence, or what?

Connie, It is in pill form and patients are supposed to take 2 tablets twice a day. I was reading about some of the side affects and it looks like the most prevalant one is blisters on the bottom of the feet and palms of the hand. Of course there are other side affects also noted in some cases. In the trials it showed great promise in stopping the growth of the cancer and also in some cases reducing the tumors. It was already approved for kidney cancer by the FDA before they stopped the trials for the liver cancer . I did try to find out if the FDA has already approved it for liver cancer but really was not very successful. My insurance is covering it though so I'm thinking that the FDA must have approved it. At this point it is my husband's only shot for some kind of help. As his liver is too damaged for any other kind of treatment. They do have a web site. Just Google Nexavar. My husband's local cancer doctor was able to contact the company and get my insurance's approval. If you want to email me I am at diannedotschafferat comcastdotnet. Thanks, Pink. What this drug apparently does is what has already been done for me through chemoembolization and Therasphere. Therefore, I suppose I will have to proceed with surgery on the 30th. That's only a week from Mon.! As much as I dread it, I'm anxious to get it behind me. I'm hoping if the cancerous rt. lobe of my liver is removed, I will start feeling better after the initial healing (a case of things getting worse before they get better.) Of course, I will still be faced with hep C therapy down the road.

I'm glad to hear that there is another viable option for stopping the growth of liver cancer and perhaps shrinking the tumors which, in a case like mine, would render a patient operable who wasn't previously.
