For those of you who are unsure whether you have hep C or liver disease: Go to a hepatologist, even if you need to get a referral and pay for it yourself!! Get tested and scanned!
The reason I am on my soapbox about this is because of what I witnessed in the lobby of the transplant center on Monday: A young woman was on her cell phone, crying, and broke down...falling to her knees and crying. Another patient and I heard her say something about her husband and "advanced liver cancer." We went to her and asked if we could help. She said that her husband has terminal liver cancer and less than a year to live. Apparently, she had just gotten this news and was blown away. I told her I had just been through that and mentioned my surgery and being cancer free now. However, she said her husband's cancer had metastasized to his adrenals and "all over." This definitely is not good news. They will not operate if cancer has metastasized, nor give him a transplant, either. He truly does sound terminal. I have to wonder what finally got him to the doctor, and how long he had not been feeling well, or if he had no symptoms at all? I have to think that he probably had some symptoms that he ignored or put off getting checked out, and now it is too late.
Conversely, there was another patient I spoke with who had pancreatic cancer--a tumor on her pancreas. There are usually no symptoms with pancreatic cancer until it is too late, but she had turned yellow and immediately went to get checked out. Now she is able to have the cancerous growth removed and keep on living.
So PLEASE, people! Don't be afraid to get checked out. Get blood work and ask that a liver panel be done, and also a hepatitis screening. You will either get a load off your mind if you are okay, or catch a liver problem early enough to be treated.
