Here's the thing.... Moderation. I think many of us can handle the "no-no" foods as long as we're careful. We need to learn when to restrain ourselves. I wouldn't swear off your lactose-free chocolate obsession, I would just ration it out.
I have to admit though, sometimes I eat when I know I'm going to pay for it. It's something I think out carefully and weigh out the pros and cons. Sometimes it's just worth it to be in tastebud heaven for a moment of bliss (followed by what seems like the devil's wrath).
I'm glad you're feeling better though. It's actually sort of refreshing to know exactly what caused your attack. All too often we are left with a bunch of question marks.
