I have been suffering with what has been diagnosed as IBS with nausea, for years now. I started getting mild symptoms as a teen, and it progressively got worse as I got older (I'm now 36.) I'm not really sure if what I suffer from is truly IBS, but the doctors can't come up with anything else. I have had an endoscopy and colonoscopy, which came back normal.
My symptoms are brought on by eating, and at it's worst, only takes a few bites. Shortly after a meal, I will start to feel nauseous and will feel a bowel movement coming on. I have never had pain with my condition, and my bowel movements range from somewhat loose to firm. The nausea will typically go away after the bowel movement, but it can take a while. It usually takes me 1 to 2 hours to recover from an attack. I have never vomited from an attack (I will try everything to keep it from happening, especially when in a public restroom), though sometimes wonder if it would alleviate the nausea. It is extremely debilitating, and causes anxiety about eating and social functions. Due to the fact that my nausea is tied to bowel movements, leads my doctor to suspect it is a weird form of IBS.
At it's worst, a few years ago, I lost almost 50 pounds because I was too afraid to eat! At that point, it happened nearly everyday, sometimes twice a day. All I could do was go to work, and try to not eat, so as to ward off an attack. Fortunately my boss and co-workers were very understanding, because there were many times I would have to camp out in the bathroom until I felt like I could function again. For my particular condition, there are drugs that work to keep it under control. I have been on several different serotonin uptake inhibitor drugs, such as Paxil and Lexapro. These drugs are typically used for depression and anxiety, but in my case, I have a "brain/gut" disconnect, and the serotonin uptake inhibitors complete the circuit and tell my stomach and bowels to quit freaking out. It also helps to control the horrible anxiety that develops from this. I hate being on these drugs long term, and once I get my condition back under control, I will wean myself off of them. I have been doing well the last few years, but recently, it's starting to come back, so I will be off to the doctor for more meds.
I wanted to share my story, hoping it will help someone else. It's also nice to know I'm not the only one suffering similar symptoms. If you have not already tried the serotonin uptake inhibitors mentioned above, it may be worth mentioning to your doctor. These drugs have enabled me to live a normal life, travel, eat out, etc. I'm still sensitive to stomach/bowel upset in new or stressful situations, especially when I'm off my routine (such as travelling), but I'm able to live my life, which is important.
