Has anyone ever used Amitriptyline?

I have been given Amitriptyline to help with mild anxiety that leads to IBS. Anyone else used it? Side effects? Does it work?

This drug is used for IBS for D and for pain. It has been shown to help some people.

A side effect of it is C.

They usally start off with a low dose.

My daughter is currently taking it (she's suspected of having IBS), her GI told her it could take up to 2 months before it kicks in, she's only been on it for about a month and hasn't noticed much of a difference so far other than she is finally able to sleep all through the night now, she often woke up in severe belly pain and sometimes would have to "go" to the toilet as a result of her belly pain...sometimes all that came out was gas and /or mucous. Like with most thing it likely varies as to how long before one notices any improvements (if at all) but it's definitely being uses as a cross-over drug for IBS (since it's actually designed for anxiety), my daughter doesn't have any anxiety so it's being used to see if it will help her suspected IBS symptoms.

I have taken amitrypyline 25mg for many years. It was first prescribed for headaches, and also helps with interstitial cystitis(which I also have.) I have not had any improvement with my irritable bowel from it though. It definitely does not cause me to be constipated.

A doctor gave me this for IBS in 2004. However, within a couple weeks I was 100% impotent. This can be a side effect for men. I'd rather have a weird poo poo than have no sex life whatsoever! So I told the doctor I was going off it. He shrugged and didn't suggest anything else, so I found another doctor.

It may help some and may not help others.

I think statistically antidepressants help 1 in 3 people.

Hi Shawn, she's 19, will be 20 on this coming monday...she's been having these complaints of a bad tummy, sometimes with D or even with a normal bowel movement. Of course being a girl, during her periods things get worse...Thanks for posting the link, it's very interesting and I just emailed it to my daughter so she can discuss it with her GI when she sees her in a few months.

                  After 2 years of chronic diahrrea problems,  I was dxd w/diahrrea predominant IBS. My gastroenterologist prescribed me amitriptyline & it was like a miracle drug for me. I know everyone has different experiences/outcomes w/different drugs. It might work great for me & not for others. I was very relieved to finally have an answer at least. I also have MS,  so everything is difficult. I was dxd w/MS 12 years ago. The IBS issue didn't start until Feb 07'. In my opinion,  MY IBS is related to my MS because in Feburary 07' was the start of the worst MS exacerbation I have had to date. It took a total of 7 months from start to finish of that exacerbation for recovery (which included a 1 month stay in the hospital). I was also dxd w/Restless Leg Syndrome at that time. So like I said, it was the worst MS exacerbation I have had to date & brought about alot of" new problems" for me. I believe alot of my issues ARE related to my MS. The Gastro dr. doesn't think so because IBS is so common amongst the population. He may be the dr., but as the patient experiencing what I have thus far, I think I may be correct based on my situation & what my experiences/timelines have been.

          My urologist recently thought I had Interstitial Cystitis. It actually started as what knew was a urinary tract infection (I have alot of bladder issues because of my MS (I am on 75mg of baclofen per day). I was scheduled for a Cystoscopy because the dr. said the urinalysis showed no infection. The drs. office then called me to say they were calling in an rx to my pharmacy for an antibiotic. The results from the hospital urinalysis indeed showed I had a urinary tract infection (I am assuming the drs. dipstick office test was incorrect or the hospital did a more thorough lab test). Because of this I requested the Cystoscopy be cancelled. Because of the bladder issues I have from my MS, I know this is not the end of this & they will probably sometime in the future request I have the procedure done. Can you tell me what your experience has been with Interstitial Cystitis & what I can expect if I get to that point again??? I appreciate anything you can tell me.   Thanks.
