 I know this was addressed in another post but I think my answer/question got lost.

 Several of you said that this has happened to you also. How do you know that it is caused by IBS? Were you told this by a medical professional or did you learn about it elsewhere and if you don't mind me asking, "where?"

Also do you know the medical term for it?

 I had it happen two days ago and have searched the internet high and low for the cause or term and came up with nothing. Mine was also streaked with a very, very  tiny amount of blood but my hemmorhoids are flared up and I think that is the cause. Going to see thedoc about it just in case there is something else going on.

The Rome Criteria II, which is what doctors go by to diagnose IBS, lists passing mucus as one of the symptoms of IBS. From what some of us have read online or have been told by doctors, mucus is naturally produced in the intestines, but when they are irritated, they sometimes produce excess mucus. I likened this to my nose producing excess mucus when I breathe in something I'm allergic to that aggrevates my nasal passage.

After reading the Rome II Process for diagnosis of IBS I found only one that mentioned mucous and it did not say that it was the passage of mucous only but the passing of mucous WITH stool. Of all the symptomsof IBS I have read in my studies of IBs they have not ever indicated or even suggested that mucous without stool is a symptom. Yes, it does say there may be an increase of mucous but it never says mucous without stool. So if you go by the Rome II Process then that eliminates this hypothesis.

I do know that there are a number of people on here who have had IBS for ages and who sometimes pass nothing but mucus; it doesn't seem to be all that unusual.

I wouldn't worry too much about the mucus and no stool. It is SUPER common among IBSers to pass just mucus. Probably because most of us feel like we still have to "go" after we've just gone. We try again but there's nothing there but mucus. ***That's my theory anyway.***
Anyway, IBS is still quite baffling to doctors as well as us. I hardly see heartburn and nausea as a symptom, but I do have them.

But my question still remains: With no documented proof how does one know for sure that this is a symptom of IBS and not something else that possibly needs to be looked into by a doctor?

No one can be sure of anything with IBS. You don't have to take our word for it... Call your doc and ask.

Passing mucus alone can happen with IBD as well, I've gone through that with my CD.

Yes my Doctor told me I had IBS about a year ago. This week is first time I have ever passed Mucus in my poo.  White milky substance with a lil blood.

I know I have a hermmoroid on the outside from trying to go, but not sure if i have anything wrong INSIDE.  I don't feel bad or anything. It scared me to death

till i got on here and read about this. I read it could be bacteria in your intestines too.. One time I read it could be cancer and it scared me to death.

So seems I should be fine the way everyone is talking.. And the mucus could be a sign of healing..  :)   LETS HOPE

I have IBS and also experience this very same thing............no worries here.  My hubby has Crohn's and passess mucous too.

"Some patients see gobs of mucous in the stool and become concerned. Mucous is a normal secretion of the bowel, although most of the time it cannot be seen. IBS patients sometimes produce large amounts of mucous, but this is not a serious problem. "

It can be when you have stool or just sometimes JUST mucous.

The bowel is constantly shedding cells.


Sorebut, Crohn's is an inflammatory bowel disorder. IBS is a disorder of function.

In Crohn's there is overt inflammation which can be seen with testing. There are symptoms that separate the two disorders.

Great thank you so much.. :)  Well I am still have mucus but I am going.. I wouldn't say good bowel movements but I am going

so it hasn't stopped.. Been taken stool softner too.  I was just concerned I had to go to the doctor over something crazy again.

do you think your ibs started a year ago, or do you think you have had it longer?

I think I have had it at least a year now on and off.. When I do get it, I can't burp or fart you may say.. It's like something is clogged. that's when the pain really sets in. Like today all day it feels like I have a bladder infection, But as soon as I have a bowel movement BINGO the pain goes away. Dr told me it was my stool pressing on my bladder when i Go. I was sick 2 yrs ago with mono/streph/flu/pnemonia all at once so the had me on so many different types of anitobiotics.. I thought they killed my system.. After that is when I started all this trouble with my stomach :( Now it's still lingers,, but this is first time I have ever had the mucus.. :(

Could be related to the antibiotics. Are you taking probiotics? My appearance of mucus was a precursor to my UC symptoms. It would not hurt to get checked out by a GI if the symptoms appear to get worse. Interestingly, with my first colonoscopy after months of exhibiting IBS symptoms, the doctors couldn't find "any" inflammation in my colon,(said it was IBS) and yet within a year of that, I was full blown UC.

WOW. yeah I am taken Florajen. 20 Billion Live cultures. I dunno. I was in so much pain and yet no doctors would give me anything for pain. My friend was in pain almost same place and they had her on morphine for a week. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Told her after a week too i don't see anything wrong with you, and said its IBS.. I BEGGED dr to go down my throat and up my butt to see what was wrong. I am 36 and he said nahh your to young for colonscopy even tho colon cancer runs n my family. Now I have no insurance, at the time I did and had met my deductible.. now I am just screwed. :(. maybe someday I will find a good job again that can help me heal.

One is never "too young" for a colonoscopy if the symptoms warrant it. What does your daily diet look like?? Do you eat/drink artificial sweetener at all?...and it is hidden in lots of our food.

hmm not really i usually have eggs in the morning with OJ and some cranberry applesauce..  Then I usually drink a pop, and for dinner it could vary. My mom usually trys to feed us right.. Fish, veggies, potatoes. But I do snack on chips, chocolates, and ice cream.. :(   I am not fat tho i am very active but my insides not like me much LOL

Sounds like you may be ingesting a fair share of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) which is not good for anyone to eat, let alone a troubled colon. If you are eating any diet or "light" labeled foods, you are probably eating artificial sweetener, not so good. The preservatives/chemicals in the processed foods may be bothering you, as well. I would try a more natural, whole foods only approach and see if you don't get some results. Soda does not go well for anyone with IBS or IBD. The carbonation can be a killer, for one. Just a thought......

Oh i never eat DIET foods at all.  I do like salads.. Who knows.. :(  My monthly visitor is here now too. So I can't tell if i am coming or going anymore.

With this IBS and the mucus still coming out. and the pressure feels like I have to pee all the time. It don't seem like a I have a uTi.. So I dunno..

Must be the IBS kicking in..  I have tried laxitives and what not.. I really would hate to have to go back to the doctor after all the money I spent on them

already to tell me NOTHING IS WRONG.. :(

Sore Butt

Oj can be a trigger and so can cranberry, both highly acidic.

Eggs can cause gas and hence pain.

pop is a major no no.

Chocolate can be a trigger through serotonin production in the gut.

Your not getting off to a good start with what your eating.

and artificial sweeteners can cause osmotic D.

Oh goodness. I can't win for losing lol.. i was thinking the cranberry would help me to prevent bladder infections lol.. now OJ yes goes right through me.
Looks like I just need fruits and veggies RAW lol.. yeah I still have the mucus coming out... sigh...

I would also be careful with raw fruits and vegetables. To much of those can be a problem as well. The fruit because of fructose and some vegs because they can produce more gas.

On the cranberry you might still be able to drink some just in moderation and maybe not first thing in the morning.

The "act of eating" itself can trigger the gut as well.

The mucous can be just because its a gut flareup. But this is again not something to be too concern with because its common in IBS and harmless, just darn annoying.

I have a problem that seems to be getting worse. I pass mucus, sometimes blood usually in stool, but just now it is without any stool, just with wind. My job is sitting at pc 8 hours a day. I passed bloody stools earlier in the year & saw Consultant quickly. Endoscopy & colonoscopy showed nothing. But my digestive system is truely messed up!!! I had gall bladder removed in 2006 & I have had problem on & off ever since. I started exercising again this week & put my problem down to this as jogging seems to exaserbate the whole thing. Jogging is one of the exercises I actually enjoy. I believe I have heamorrhoids, which proabaly doesn't help. But do I get the blood I am passing this week checked out again - just in case something was missed as I know it can be a sign of something more sinister or do I just wait and hope it goes away? What would IBS sufferer recommend?
