I was just diagnosed with IBS recently and while I'm happy to pinpoint what's wrong With me the pain is sometimes unbearable. even though I have changed my eating I am still having this aching pain in my upper abdomen. Can anyone tell me if this is normal while I'm healing from being so sick? Or is this pain going to be constant for me now. The doctor will not give me anything for the pain just the Levsin for the cramps which does help but not completely. And makes me feel soo dry! Thanks for any advice.

I have a IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) along with IBS so sometimes it's hard to distinguish between the two pains. However, when my IBD goes into remission and I have to deal with the IBS, I notice that if I watch what I eat then the pain isn't so bad or it goes away. Maybe try keeping a food diary; this can help you find foods that aggravate it. Do you have IBS-C or IBS-D? I've never tried Levsin but I do take Bentyl. This helps me a lot and it doesn't dry me out.

What's the difference between ibs and ibd? I haven't eaten anything since last might and I still hurt. It's getting very frustrating and hard for me to get to work.

IBS = Irritable Bowel Syndrome - it does not injure the colon. The colon will appear normal but it malfunctions (un-synchronized contractions).

IBD - Inflammatory Bowel Disease - this is a chronic disease such as Crohn's and Ulcerative colitis where the colon is actually damaged by ulcerations and inflammation.

Do you normally have diarrhea or constipation?

Sharky, I found with my IBS that an antidepressant helped. I take a derivative of paxil and if I try to go off, my IBS really acts up. You might talk to your doc about an antidepressant. Often, people with IBS have an imbalance of serotonin and that's what causes the IBS. Levsin dried me out something awful too. It was really a bad feeling.

I have ibs with diarrhea predominately but occasional constipation. Thank you for the tip on antidepressants I will look into that.

There are different ways to manage the pain.

Antidepressants

antispasmatics

CBT

Gut directed Hypnotherapy, which by the way is one of the best studied to show pain relief in IBS and long term.

Its important here to learn more about IBS. Really important

I think the CBT would be great. Feel like I need some sort of mind warp to keep me from eating foods I know I shouldn't.
I have ordered a couple books and have been reading as much on the Internet as I can. My doctor told me to take Miralax the antispasmodic and Activia and told me to eat whatever I wanted. Which obviously I've learned there's way more to it than that. Not to mention the fact I'm allergic to dairy and it made me super sick. Thanks doctor haha

I have IBS for over 30 years now 46. Antidepression medication can help releived stress with spasm. Take Librax there's another name for it. The best way to relieve pain move around sometime helps the spasm. less painful. Dairy products really the main issue of the problem not to used in food. To be restricted from receipes. When flare up act up sometime dry toast help to have little something in your stomach when you can't eat at all. Takes time to find what really words on your body as everyone is diffrent. This website very helpful gives people idea of help that would work or won't. It's matter of taking that chance.

I have IBS and take Benytl which really does help..and also I use low heat from a heating pad but if you have an all over feeling of pain or have a specific pain on your lower left side and fever make sure you are not having a diverticular attack...which is serious and you need an antibiotic..It is a very vicious cycle trying to determine what food cause discomfort..I wish we had an answer to that ..

Is Bentyk the antispasmodic? Dies it make you feel dry I take Levsin which helps but I feel like I'm eating sand.

Yes and no it doesn't make me dry..It really helps but when my colon spasms I take it 3 times a day..
