I had a colonoscopy on tuesday my GI dr said the meds they use in IV are the same as oxy that I had built up a resistance to them and would probably not get much pain relief from them during the procedure but they would try to be gentle.

I don't know if the Dr just hates me or if this was true but I am wondering if anyone has had the same happen to them.

Have personally never heard of that. When I have had a scope I have either had Midazolam which is an IV sedative or Propofol which is an anaesthetic. I would ask if you can have a sedative.

I only wish the GI doctor had told me of this at my last appt instead of telling me when I am on a bed all prepped for the procedure. I had the colonoscopy had polyps removed and was asked to adjust my position several times during the procedure. I am going to discuss this entire appt with my family dr and ask to be referred elsewhere as I am never going back to that GI Dr.

I've gone through the colonoscopy some 25 times, and I've taken enough pain pills in my life that versed (IV sedative) isn't working for me anymore.

The Propofol is the only route to go. It's a great med. Demand that next time.

Propofol I will do some research on this as I will be needing another colonoscopy because polyps were found and removed. I will also be going to another GI Dr because there is no way I could ever go through this again with a Dr that really has a lack of compassion. I am still very sore and I am still going like I am still on the prep.

I always refuse Versed (midazolam) because it does nothing for pain, only makes you not remember it - gives you amnesia. I've heard plenty of people screaming during colonoscopy while I was waiting for mine.

Propofol is an anesthetic. puts you right to sleep and you don't feel anything. You wake up with your brain intact, unlike with Versed which can leave you woozy and give you amnesia for hours - the reason they say not to sign anything or drive for 24 hours.

I frankly don't believe they can't give you a decent pain med - demerol or such - even if you do take pain meds. They're just being lazy and don't want to titrate the dose.

Total BS. I have lots of colonoscopies and have taken oxycodone in high doses for ortho issues (courtesty of the last Gulf War) and pain relief during colonoscopy has never been an issue. Probably because I have a great GI doc; she uses (as most do) propofol which is a real anesthetic not the amnesia-causing garbage (Versed/midazolam) that all too many places seem to use. I never really trusted most doctors, but my GI doc is a gem; I have a Ph.D. in pharmacology (I never mentioned that because I wanted to see how they explained the drugs to a patient)...basically: "if you want to sleep thru the colonoscopy we will give you propofol and some painkiller (fentanyl). If you want to watch we can give you painkiller only as needed (fentanyl). We don't recommend Versed at all because of long-term memory loss and PTSD" It's your choice; you had a lousy doctor. I get mine withour meds and I'm fine with tha; the doc and the nurses don't like that because they don't like to see a patient in pain.....

I have spoken with my family dr and another dr about this and they both were not happy about my treatment however they both said this is the best GI doctor in the city. I said I don't ever want to see her again I insist on a referral to a different GI doctor. The only way I can see a GI is through referral here and referrals can take months.
