Lactase pills aren't the answer either. I can eat 6 of them before eating ice cream and get a nasty gas and cramping reaction before I even finish eating it. Lactaid brand seems to work a little better, but my only hope for lactose is lactose-free milk and ice cream. Even the free ice cream has to be in very small amounts. I wish the drops were still on the market, as they worked much better!
I have no problem with whey milk protein, which I add to some foods for protein, since I am lacking in that department.
Home-made bread and bakery bread that is not made in a chain store may be lactose-free, but you have to ask. Companies advertizing no additives or preservatives seem to have products I can eat, even with a wheat intolerance - just not much! The others will give me a reaction with one slice within a few minutes.
Hard cheeses may be difficult to digest, but some of the soft ones may be tolerable in small amounts. I have to avoid the tasty Greek yogurt like the plague.
for the ice cream, try ice cream with low fat. And skip the ice cream on days you have had a lot of other dairy. Like if you had pizza for dinner, skip it for desert. For bread, try "Arnold", 90% of their breads are dairy free. if anyone else has questions, I AM NOT AN EXPERT, but being lactose intolerant since i was 4, as well as having atleast a 1/3 or my extended family being lactose intolerant, means i know a lot of tricks for dealing with it.
