Hi jc,
Because IBS is in fact a label for a constellation of symptoms of functional digestive issues when no anatomical problem or other test abnormality can be found, the two are very similar.
And actually, the chest symptoms you describe, if a full recent cardiac work up is negative, is often caused by the same underlying process as your digestive symptoms, as a result of low-grade, chronic stress.
This affects our entire body system and brain, and causes physical symptoms like bloating, changes in bowel habits, and palpitations and feeling 'stressed' or anxious out of the blue.
Luckily there are simple things you can start doing today to start reversing this stress effect on your nervous system and your gut and start feeling well again. Any mindbody practice, done daily, to activate your body's physiological relaxation response will work really well for this. I really like breath work techniques, but in a text post without leaving a video link, I'll give you simple one that also works well, called the Benson technique to start with:)
Steps:
Find a quiet spot, sit comfortably and pick a word: if you are not religious or don't already meditate, you can use the word 'one.' If you have a short prayer or meditation phrase you can use this too;)
Ok, so breath in through your nose and out through your mouth, making your exhale LONGER than your inhale. On the exhale, repeat your word over in your head. Sit comfortably and do this for at least 10 minutes each day. This simple technique will help you to turn on your Relaxation Response and start to help soothe your gut via the brain belly connection that is so important but often overlooked in IBS.
Do this every day for 2 weeks and it should really start to help jc!
