Painful rectal burning after BM

First off, i have no history of bowel issues. I was put on Cipro for a possible prostate infection (I have back problems, so my doc threw Cipro saying "this might help?"). The first few days being on it I got lots of stomach problems and nausea. My stools came out black, but no painful BMs. After six days the doc took me off Cipro, and I began having tons of bloating and inability to pass the gas. When I had a bowel movement, it was extremely painful and after I felt terrible burning and itching. When I looked at the stool, it was normal. No blood, it didn't look too big.

Sitting in a bath after a BM seems to numb the pain, but its not a cure. For the past 3 days my BMs have been excruciating. Often after a BM I feel my rectum get swollen.

What do I do? The thought of a colonoscopy seems impossible. It's a painful event to make one bowel movement per day, trying to cleanse my bowels for 16 hours would kill me. I'm taking probiotics to see if that helps at all.

Did you pass any larger than normal or hard stools prior to the painful BMs beginning? It sounds as if you might have a fissure. A fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anus. When I had one it literally felt if I was passing razor blades or shards of glass. If this sounds familiar, then see or call your doctor. He can prescribe ointment or gel that helps with both the pain and to promote healing.

I doubt that a colonoscopy would be immediately ordered for this without trying other treatments.

Wouldn't there have to be even the slightest sign of blood on the stool or from wiping? I don't recall having a larger than normal stool being passed.

I may see my doctor on Monday but until then i'm on my own.

Sounds like an anal fissure to me too.

And yes, you can have that pain without blood but if you don't address the situation there will be blood sooner or later.

I am just now getting through the same thing.  It happened to me almost exactly as you described.

I did the precription ointment.  (nifedipine) Seemed like it was helping at first because the pain diminished quite a bit right away.  But, after two weeks of the prescribed ointment it began to bleed and the pain intensified.

The GREAT news:

Go to the drug store.  Get a tube of zinc oxide.  After every BM clean down there well (wipe with either wet toilet paper or medicated wipes.)  Squeeaze a pea sized amount of zinc oxide onto your finger and apply to anus.  (I could feel where the fissure was in my case...perhaps you can feel yours as well)  Do this after each BM.

By the end of the first day there was significant change.  I am 3 days into this and now there is no pain whatsoever...even after a large BM has passed.  You will be amazed...and quite happy.

I can't claim credit.  I found this remedy for anal fissures as i desperately surfed many websites looking for answers.  (and what a wild array of answers I found!)  Simple, plain old zinc oxide ointment is the ONLY way to go.  Before I finally tried it, I was certain I would have to have surgery for the fissure.  Here I am, three days into using it and I feel completely normal.  I will continue to use it for awhile to make sure it is indeed completely healed.

Oh BTW, this fissure started AFTER I had a nasty perianal abcess.  I was able to defeat that SOB without it turning into a fistula (something I was deathly afraid would happen...I didn't want to go through any of what I had read so many poor souls go through)  I think some of my unconventional methods for healing the abcess brought on the fissure.

Zinc Oxide.  Zinc Oxide, Zinc Oxide!!!!!

Kills/heals a fissure in 3 days.  If you start today (Dec. 21st) you'll have a Merry Christmas.

I could have wrote your post, cirpropain. I would get severe anal burning in the hours following a bowel movement, that could last for an entire day and even keep me awake at night. Baths helped momentarily, but it would return. It was excruciating. I could not sit for more than a few minutes. I was also diagnosed with Prostatitis and put on Cypro, but I did not have Prostatitis.

The problem was actually a simple one. I had changed my diet, which resulted in loose stools. Have you ever experienced pooping, and the last bit won't come out, and so you close your anus and "cut it off"? During bowel movements, I would experience that. I would properly clean myself after the bowel movement, but what would happen is over the next few hours tiny bits of loose stool that were near the exit to my anus would come out. These uncleaned bits of stool caused the excruciating burning.

Here is how I solved this. I squat over the floor. I took a small handheld mirror with 3x magnification, and placed it directly under my anus. With one hand I held a flashlight behind me, and that light allowed me to see my anus. With the other hand, I take a Q-Tip and thoroughly clear any bits of stool that I see. After I did that, the excruciating pain subsided completely.
