Hi Guys - The GI doc put me on Flagyl back in June. I took 10 days of it for possible bacterial overgrowth. Then he suggested an anti-depressant class drug. My GP prescribed Escitalopram (which I have taken before, many years ago) and after 3 weeks on it, my IBS is pretty much gone!!!! I guess it was anxiety based? Just wanted to share in case anyone is as desperate as I was and looking into SIBO and/or antidepressants. Spicy food still doesn't agree with me much, but other than that, the IBS is 90% better.

AubreyBear,
GOOD FOR YOU and do let ANYONE get you down by what they may say.
I apologize to everyone who may be offended by what I have to say, but researching this site will prove that what I am saying is simply observing.
People do not WANT to believe you are cured, or almost cured... When I posted that my grain free diet cleared up my ibs after 15 years I did NOT GET ONE RESPONSE!!! Not one.
I observed this with two other people who had success stories. NO "GOOD FOR YOU" responses. Nothing. NAda. Zip.
Its human nature, I know to feel jealous and so wishing that after so much hard work, they seem to get no where, and that is sad.
My advice to you is this: IGNORE people who write things like, well don't get your hopes up, it probably won't last....
If I were you I would just maybe 'stay away' from support groups for awhile...and keep taking one day at a time. SO WHAT if you have small episodes of the old problem again. It will ALSO go away again!!
My only other advice would be to keep a food chart (even though it kinda bugs you at times to do so! :) but if you DO have episodes, you can 'see' on the chart. Plus, your emotional state has a GREAT deal to do with it...rate your day from a 1 to a 10 and you will see how much difference your moods and emotions can make.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Bettsann - I actually though Rick was probably just a troll. I cannot make sense out of anything he said. The only thing that stuck out to me was the "overeating" comment - FYI, Rick, I actually run 25-30 miles a week and don't overeat by any means.
Thanks for the advice. I am staying on top of it! I am keeping to my list of foods for now and slowly venturing off of it. Thai is my favorite though, so that was worth it!! Even if no one here is happy for me, my Gastroenterologist will be after all of the work he has put into helping me!

Wow, that's really encouraging!
Mine might be anxiety-based as well and I just had a failed attempt to get on an antidepressant, but am working on regulating my body in other ways.
Thanks for posting - that gives the rest of us hope!

Rick - your post to my situation is almost offensive. I run 5-6 times a week, I eat very healthily, before this situation took NO medication. I don't take any of the medications you listed below. I have the blood pressure of a 15 year old athlete. I was on a strict diet with so many things cut out with NO success. The ONLY thing that has helped me is the Flagyl and antidepressant. I kept the antidepressant in my medicine cabinet for MONTHS before I was even willing to try it and I only took it out of pure desperation to get help for my situation. I was missing work to see the GI doc who had NO clue what was wrong with me, I was staying near a toilet, not enjoying my vacations and eating the same food every single day. I needed help. I went through a colonoscopy and many tests. The doctor had no clue what to tell me.
As my very supportive family has told me, and I will tell others here - you have to do what works for you and this is what has worked for me, for now. After 2 years of the pain, blood, inconvenience, embarrassment, I had to do something! So I did. And I posted my success here to hopefully help someone who was in my position, not to trigger criticism from someone who knows nothing about
me or my situation. So please refrain. Again, this post is for anyone who is looking for a possible solution to their situation that is like mine.

Wow people post hurtful stuff because somebody found a solution to there problem i too had ibs im a male by the way not that it matters but anyway it disappeared for almost four years and within the last four months its came back up untill last week i had taken no medication and it vanished on its own only to come back what im saying is that if it helps you get better why not try whatever you have to unfortunately i keep seeing a repeat trend in the fact that doctors dont seem very helpful

nelly - Doctors were not very helpful for me either. My gastro doctor was very nice and supportive but he could not tell me what was wrong. I am completely convinced I have IBS and for some reason, the Lexparo seems to help. I can't just eat junk though - I have noticed that if I eat junk, the IBS rears its head a bit, so I'm staying away from gluten and junk food for now. I had a flare up last night from something I ate yesterday, who knows what. So, I'm not out of the woods completely, yet.

Well this is a strange one but I have found that all bran is helping me. I put it in with other cereals. Hey, it can't hurt me and is not a drug.
best wishes all.
