Hi guys. I'm a frequent lurker and poster over at the GERD forums. Since you guys obviously know more about
IBS, I thought I'd ask you for some advice. If you would take the time to hear my story, I would be forever grateful.
For those of you who don't have time, or don't feel like reading too much, here's the
short version:
Been using 40-80mg PPIs daily for 5 years to treat GERD. 2 years ago I started burping 50-100 times a day, and this happened over night. Over the next couple of months I got intolerant to many different foods that I've been eating all my life without problems (milk wheat etc.) Symptoms when eating them were stomach pain and diarrhea. After I stopped eating these foods completely my stomach got a little better, but I still have major stomach pain and diarrhea problems, and I still burp 50-100 times daily. A bit down there's a list of what tests and treatments I've done.
Here's the
longer version of what happened:
I'm a 22 year old guy. Except for my GERD and hearthburn, I've had no stomach problems in my entire life. No abdominal pain and no diarrhea. 5 years ago I was put on 40-80mg PPis daily to reduce the acid in my stomach and treat my chronic GERD symptoms. Everything was just amazing and I ate everything I wanted without any problems at all. My entire life I've been a big consumer of milk, drinking maybe 1 litre a day since I was a kid, and it has never bothered me at all.
Fast forward 3 years and over the night I start to burp excessively after eating. I mean like maybe 100 times a day. A month later or so the real problems started. I started getting massive stomach aches and bad diarrhea. I soon linked my symptoms to milk consumption so I stopped drinking it and felt better. One month later, same thing all over again with wheat, another thing I've been eating all my life. This just kept going with more and more foods, until the point where there's not that much I can eat anymore. I went to the doctor who just said I was allergic and that my IgE levels (Allergic levels) were high and that my stomach would settle down when the levels did. It didn't and i get IBS no matter what I eat.
So here I am a year later, with major IBS-D and food intolerances, still burping 50-100 times a day and don't know what to do.
These are
the tests and treatments I've done and the results I've gotten:
4 allergy and intolerance tests: I'm allergic to peanuts and some other stuff, and total IgE levels: 300-500. Intolerant to milk, wheat and the other stuff I cant eat any more.
2 Endoscopies: Clear
1 Colonoscopy: Clear
1 stool test: Clear, but showed signs of allergies
Several complete blood works: Clear, no H.Pylory
The only thing that has actually HELPED is 20mg amitriptyline (Aka Elavil) daily. It reduces my stomach discomfort and diarrhea greatly, and for this I'm thankful.
I still can't accept that I've got "real IBS", and I'm convinced that there something, hopefully treatable, that's causing all this. I'm ceratin the high doses of PPIs 40-80mg daily I've been taking has played some role in this. The only remaining thing that I could come up with could cause all this is SIBO. I've asked to get tested for this but the doctors have been reluctant. Also, would amitriptyline (Elavil) relieve symptoms if SIBO caused this?
What do you think guys. Is there anyone out there with a similar experience? Does this sound like SIBO or is there something else that could cause this sudden onset of IBS?
Thanks in advance guys.
Jakob.
