Hi! I am new to this forum and was recently referred to a surgical specialist because I have been diagnosed with Rectal prolapse prolapsed. I would prefer to refrain from having surgery and was would like some input of how to help prevent symptoms from worsening/ or cure it all together. I have read in multiple different forums that it is important to keep your stool soft. I have issues with this, as it always seems that the very beginning of my stool is extremely hard and difficult to pass, yet the rest is soft. I eat very healthy (lots of fruits and veggies, I stay away from the greasy stuff) but nothing helps! Does anyone have suggestions on what to eat to or what I should do to try to soften the beginning of my stool?? Thank you!!

Do you have "complete prolapse, or full-thickness rectal prolapse"?

Hi Shawn12,

It is not complete or full thickness prolapse. It has not reached that point yet and I was hoping to get some advice on how to keep it under control and prevent it from worsening. Any suggestiosn would be greatly appreciated!!

Are you female? There is physical therapy and one could use a pessary.

I had uterine prolapse, rectocele and my bladder was pulled out of place also. The pessary helped my rectocele a lot. I ended up getting a abdominal hysterectomy and my bladder taped up and the rectocele sewed up.

Lambchops, I wish I could help but don't know all that much about it all.

Did you tell the doctor you would prefer not to have surgery and ask him what might help if you don't?

Was there a reason they wanted you to have the surgery?

Tracker Mom - I am a female. Thank you so much for your suggestion. Though I am hoping to find some natural remedies.

Shawn12 - I am still waiting to see the surgical specialist so surgery is not the only option.

Does anyone have advice on just types of foods to eat to soften my stool? i eat a lot of fruits and veggies, but its not helping at all. Are there any supplements or certain types of food that anyone would recommend?

From what I was reading on the site I posted they mentioned fiber.

I would also ask the surgeon and doctor some of the questions on diet.

@lamchops - are you still around? Did you find an alternative to surgery for rectal prolapse? Looks like I may be in the same boat!

I know nothing about this prolapse, but MOST of my life I've dealt with constipation and I'm 76....BUT, I keep nice and regular with magnesium citrate or glycinate or malate dosing 3 times per day.....Vit C helps me a lot too.

I try to eat a balanced diet and steer clear of a lot of carbs/sugar....

Just my thoughts on this....J
