Those of you who have IBS-C I have a question about your 'episodes'.

When you go through your usual days, do you not have a BM at all, or just the ones you do have are small?
Also, are you BMs hard, or kind of soft and flat and mucusy?

I have the C mostly where I don't have any BM at all. I am on medication now so instead of the 7-10 day lag, I am now at 2-3 days. Not perfect but much better. I occasionally have hard stools but within the last year its been 2-3 days without a BM and 1-2 days with D so I'm definitely back on the alternating schedule rather than the excusive C that I was for a while. I definitely rather though would take the alternate because C is rather painful.

That makes me so question what is up with myself. I do not usually have C for days, I do not usually have D for days (maybe once in a while). I usually just hurt really bad of the morning, have a burning sensation at times, and have flat soft BMs. Now, I am starting to worry that there is something other than IBS going on, and that my GI has just written off as that without catching something else.

The flat BMs and the burning could be caused by hemmies. Have you noticed any bright red blood on the TP?

Nope. And the burning isn't usually around there, its more in my gut :( I did have a colonoscopy back in December and had internal hems, but they have since gone away. The burning is only a ever so often thing, not really based off what I eat, but just happens. And those are usually the days I wind up in the washroom multiple times a day.

My C varies. Before going on Zelnorm (or anything) I wouldn't go for a few days and then I'd go normally. Then about every 1-2 weeks I'd have a bad D episode. Then the cycle would begin again... not going for a few days and then have D.
Now I'm on Digestive Advantage, probiotics and Zelnorm. Usually I go everyday (sometimes I will skip a day) and my D episodes have shrunk down to occur about ½ as often.
Mrmagoo, I think everyone has different IBS. IBS is a mystery doctors can't figure out. If you were scoped I wouldn't worry too much about other things going on. Just make sure to discuss with your doc your complaints and concerns and see if he/she feels there is anything to worry about.

Well, I am having my wife swing by and get some Digestive Advantage stuff today, I am going to start taking it and seeing if it changes anything at all. What are the side affects of that med? If it does nothing I will move on to the probiotics. I do not think I need the Zelnorm, as I am not having real issues with C, I might miss a single day, or have a few small ones for a day, but usually I am in the bathroom before I leave for work, once or twice (if not more) while at work, and maybe once after I get home. Hopefully, one of these will work out. Thanks again for the help.

No side effects with Digestive Advantage. Probiotics are probably good to take no matter what, especially if you are having D. Our good bacteria dwindles when we have D (especially if you don't have enough to begin with). I have read, and noticed myself, that D gets better if you take probiotics regularly and during a D attack.

I have had C in the past and would have terrible tomach cramps and pain.  I would feel like I had to go, but didn't do much when I got there.  This was almost every morning for years.  I went to the GI doctor and had "tests".  He said I had IBS.  I am regular now.

As long as I can remember I've only gone every 2-3 days. If its longer than that, sometimes 4-5 days, thats when the C hurts. I rarely get D. The C poo is more hard and little at first, then regular at the end. Or sometimes just hard all the way through. So annoying!!!
Isn't Zelnorm suppose dot work specifically well for females, not males? I just know that the commercials only show women... anyways.... just though i'd add my two cents :)

Zelnorm first phase was exclusively for women. They have now completed all phases and its now marketed to men and women. They have new commercials with both now :) Now don't we all wish our bellies looked like those on the commercials??? I can tell you right now just by looking at those people that they don't have IBS-C bellies LOL.

During my episodes, about every 3-4 days. And even then only if I make a conscious effort to drastically increase my fiber intake. I started taking benefiber today ... hopefully it will help sooner rather than later!

What is the best thing to take for C? I constantly alternate but when I have the C, I can't seem to find any relief. I increase my fibre pills, drink lots of water, try laxatives, etc. and can not get relief!

I get some soft, flat bowel movements...but I also suffer with crohns disease for the last 14 yrs and my GI also suspects IBS. IBS can be alternating C and D. My bowel movements vary from, soft, flat, to firmer and more formed, can't keep up with it, just glad I rarely have any loose bowel movements...I'm lactose intolerant as well, but am successful in treating that with lactaid pills.

During my bouts, I mostly go BM free. Occassionaly I'll have an extra small & hard bm. It's more like a tease than a BM.
