Dr. says I need surgery?

I am not sure where to put this thread but really confused about this condition. I have Fibro and IBS for years. I was dxed with diverticulous years ago but never had that left sided pain. Just had a failed colonostopy due to what my Dr. says is diverticulitis, had a barium enema and the dx was severe diverticulitis and my Dr. said I need surgery to remove part of my colon. I get low rib pain and have for years but seem to be getting a lot more gas recently.

Anyne have this surgery that can tell me what to expect etc. and what tests did you have to confirm it was diverticulitis. The Dr. says I either get it done now or I will be getting emergency surgery which is much harder on you.

My Dr. has a excellant reputation and I do trust him but I have all kinds of thoughts running through my mind right now and frightened.

I know of a few people that have had resections. The surgery, according to them, is a breeze compared to dealing with the pain of diverticulitis. The problem with severe diverticulitis is that if it becomes so severe where it perforates your colon, you can become septic which is quite dangerous and possibly deadly. The choice is yours of course but if you are unsure, it doesn't hurt to have a second opinion.

Hi Palmy, Sherry is spot on about this situation. My brother ended up having a perforation & it was a tough surgery as a result. He had a much longer recovery because the wound had to heal from the inside out & it had to be repacked twice a day. You do not want to go this route if you can avoid it.

A very good friend of ours had surgery 12 years ago & he has done great. He would really get sick when he would have an attack.

Consider getting a 2nd opinion if it will help ease your mind.

had the resection a few months after a perforation. The perforation happened and they had me in hospital for a while, it ended up sealing itself so I went home and rested after a week and lots of antibiotics. A few months later, decided to have resection because if this happened again, could end up with bag. Did not want that.
Still have divertic and still have attacts . Not sure what future holds but not feeling terrible

My DH was also one unlucky enough to have a perforated colon due to diverticulitis. He was hospitalized for 2 weeks, on 4 different antibiotics and was in a world of pain. 8 weeks later he was strong enough to have elective surgery, and recovery was so much more pleasant than the acute attack that landed him in the hospital. This was done in 2008 he has not had any further attacks or evidence of the diverticulitis in the last 2 colonoscopies.

I would recommend you seek a 2nd opinion if you have doubt, but generally, a colonoscopy, even a CT scan will reveal the damage. We were so fortunate to have a very highly recommended surgeon who was very very experienced at laparascopic surgery. If you need emergency surgery for this condition the outcome can be dicey.
