Hi there - first time posting in this forum, as I'm usually part of the UC one. But I was hoping you might have some help/suggestions for me.
Long story short, I was diagnosed with IBS-D in college - my "normal" has always been on the soft side, with very regular episodes of D. In 2012 I was diagnosed with UC - it had spread through my whole colon and was graded as severe. With a lot of dietary changes, supplements, and meds, I have been able to reach and stay in a good remission for the past 2 years - a recent colonoscopy showed no inflammation. Awesome news! So I hate to complain but...
My IBS symptoms are back with a vengeance. I have D every day with varying degrees of urgency. I have talked to my dr about it and he suggested I try Imodium - that doesn't stop it. I had a bad couple of days last week and in desperation before we went to the beach, I researched and found info about bile acid malabsorption and Caltrate. This is what I have, I am sure of it. I called my dr, who wanted to make sure I didn't have an infection first before going down the BAD path and prescribing Welchol, and so I submitted a poo sample before leaving for vacation. I started the Caltrate (probably a little aggressively) and had great results. After 3-4 days, I was having pretty solid bms and no pain. Awesome.
Now, a week later, I'm a mess. I feel like my BMs are incomplete - they are still pretty solid, but OMG, the burning. I didn't know if I was getting constipated from taking too much Caltrate (I was doing 1/meal, so 3X a day) - I have backed it down and today will do 1/2 a pill. The stool consistency is the same, but I still feel kind of backed up and like I said, the burning is insane. I am using diaper rash cream.
So, here is where I could use some wisdom.
1. What on earth is this burning? Is it acid?
2. Would Welchol maybe help?
3. Did anyone else have this happen with the Caltrate?
I don't want to seem like an ingrate because I know it could be so much worse - and again, I am in UC remission which is a huge deal. But I don't know what's worse - running to have diarrhea 6-7 times a day or crying during the 2 times I go each day and then running around in diaper cream.
Thanks in advance.
