BRAND OF MELATONIN = DIARRHEA? No one has mentioned what brand they're using. Anyone having an issue with Metagenics BENESOM?
I had been taking Physiologics Melatonin nightly for 5 years with great success (under the advice of my physician). In 2016, the Physiologics brand became unavailable. I switched to Metagenics - "Benesom" (again, at the advice of my physician) which contains Melatonin along with Chinese Skullcap, Valerian Root, and Passion Flower. A few weeks after the switch I experienced looser than usual stools which gradually worsened. Eventually I was running to the bathroom several times in the middle of the night with mad loose stools. After ruling out several strains of bacterial infection through lab work, my internist suggested a round of Flagyl (a known carcinogen!) followed by a colonoscopy if the anti-bacterial didn't work. I rejected both of these suggestions. On my own, I discontinued the two dozen supplements I take daily, including the BENESOM Melatonin. The diarrhea stopped in 24 hours. After a week of feeling great again, I added one-at-a-time daily to see what was giving me the diarrhea. Last night, I added the Benesom. This morning - BOOM! (Literally - LOL, sorry.) I think it's the BRAND of Melatonin creating my problem.
Please note: Metagenics is a high-quality, wonderful source of pharmaceutical grade supplements both my doctor and I trust. I believe this is just a case of my body's reaction to one of the herbal additives.
