Canadians - colonoscopy

Hey everyone, I've just had a lovely colonoscopy and used a new prep product called Pico Salax.  It tastes great...really.  Just like Tang (the orange drink).  It comes in a powder and you mix it with water.  If anyone needs more info, or you have problems getting it let me know at [email protected].  My dr. said that it was just available starting last year and he is now advising all his patients to use it.  A bit of a relief for a yucky procedure.

Thanks for the info! I'm scheduled to have a colonoscopy the end of August. I may order some from a Canadian pharmacy online. You wouldn't happen to be able to recommend one, would you? I don't want to order medicine (even if it's just a laxative) from a shady store.

I was told I couldn't have the pills and that I had to drink phosphosoda, which I was assured was not as bad as that gallon stuff--golyghtly, I think it is (it's a wonder it didn't make me vomit the last time). But I was reading on the Crohn's forum last night that a lot of people REALLY hate the phosphosoda stuff. They said it was really nasty. The only thing that made it better than the golyghtly was that there wasn't as much of it to drink.

When I said something to my BF about getting this Pico Salax he started in on "what makes you think you know better than you doctor..." and "...ordering illegal drugs..." Hey, one, he's never had a colonoscopy; I have. Two, if it's good enough for a Canadian (and works for a Canadian), it should be good enough for an American (and work for an American). Three, I don't trust doctors much further than I can throw them. After all, I had a bad gall bladder for five years and four or five doctors, including two G.I.s never diagnosed it. Do I think they know what they're doing? Not a lot of the time. I figure it's like taking your car to the mechanic; you need to be at least moderately informed before you go, else you might get a lot more work done on your car than is necessary. And secondly, do you have to use the brand and weight motor oil your mechanic recommends? If it lubes the motor, does it really matter if its a generic brand? I mean, if this stuff cleans me out, does it matter it's not what my doctor told me to buy? (For that matter a pizza and a 2-liter of coke would clean me out pretty good, but I better not rely solely on that.)

Why suffer with the phospho soda and all it does when for a few dollars more Colyte or PegLyte will do the trick with fewer side effects?  Not sure why the docs want their patients to suffer so.  I must remember Pico Salax, however, cause it may taste better than the two above mentioned.

Sometimes a prep won't fully hit you until later in the day. Once it starts though, it won't stop. How is the progress so far?

You'll be okay Mrs. B. The prep is the worst part if you use the conventional old style preps, believe me. I was using the sludgy stuff until last year when I got to use the pill prep. I will never go back to those sludge (the term "liquid" would be deceiving). That is why people say the prep is the worse and besides the fact that you are on the toilet all day, hungry, and cramping and nauseas. Where I had my colonoscopy, they put me under anesthesia and I was not awake through the whole thing. After I came to, I rested about 15 minutes and rode home with my mother in law and went home and slept the rest of the anesthesia off. Its really not bad at all. Try not to stress about it. Let us know how it goes.
