Often red looking things within our stool are partially digested food (fruit skins and seeds are common culprits) and nothing but a false alarm to us. Anything we eat changes colors as it goes through the digestive process, is doused in stomach acid and various enzymes that aid in digestion. Often something like a bit of apple skin or a seed can change to look red to orange in color, and easily be mistaken for blood. If it's a reddish thing embeded in stool then I'd say 90% percent (or greater) odds it is nothing to worry about.
Real blood in stool will drip and spread on the surface of the toilet water, much like a red drop of food dye would.
