I'm thrilled that I found this site! I had been taking 3mg Melatonin nightly for approximately 3 or 4 months. Everything was fine until the morning of September 18, 2020, when I awoke with explosive ( +++) diarrhea. I had never experienced anything like that. My doctor sent me to ER for blood tests as he( and I) were concerned about
electrolyte imbalance. The test was normal- kidney function was OK,too. Stool culture was negative for the usual bacteria.
I tried the delicious, palate-pleasing BRAT diet, and munched on nothing but white bread with jelly, (no butter, Dr. said I was likely lactose-intolerant because of the diarrhea), plain rice, decaffeinated tea and instant oatmeal (glue).
I lost five pounds- pleased at that, but not by the reason for it. I gradually added more normal food because I was hungry all the time. I also switched to lactose-free milk, butter and cheese.
Two nights ago, I forgot to take my Melatonin. Guess what- no morning mess. I could hardly believe it.
I didn't take it last night either, and had another unrushed-to-the-bathroom morning today.
I don't know what made me do it, but I googled "melatonin and diarrhea" and was overjoyed at what I found.
I felt like shouting "Eureka".
Oddly enough, tomorrow morning I have a telephone appointment with a doctor at our university hospital' Digestive Diseases Clinic. I think I'll be telling her what my problem was
A very thankful FORMER melatonin user.
