Can an intestinal virus cause IBS?

I had a virus back in august lasted 7 weeks had chronic diarrhea with it, diarrhea seems to have hung around anyone think there is a connection with Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Hi Joanmalone, that sounds like a nasty viral infection you had. Since you are still being bothered with diarrhea, I would ask my pcp to order a stool test. A stool test is simple to do. It can rule out infections, parasites & other pathogens. I would not at this time be thinking it triggered IBS. In the meantime, watch your diet, stay away from spicy foods or ones that can cause loose stools. I would not take anything OTC for diarrhea until a stool test is done too.

It could be that your symptoms are being triggered by antibiotics or dietary changes. Definitely worth seeing a doctor but there is no demonstrated connection between IBS and viral infections.

Hi, JoanMalone37, and welcome! Yes, IBS can develop from a bad virus or bacterial infection. This is from the Mayo Clinic.

“ IBS can develop after a severe bout of diarrhea (gastroenteritis) caused by bacteria or a virus. IBS might also be associated with a surplus of bacteria in the intestines (bacterial overgrowth). Changes in bacteria in the gut (microflora).

I also had a bad virus late Nov 2019 and lasted 3 months of diarrhea. Three prescription drugs did nothing for it.
GI specialist did colonoscopy result microscopic colitis. I really wonder if this was a form of Covid 19 virus too.
Cholestyramine RX has eliminated problem for past 3 months.
