Tongue Variations

Just wondered if anyone has any tongue symptoms with ibs like cracks, coatings etc? I get a white coating and cracks, which all developed after a gut infection and taking antibiotics, which then lead to IBS. Been like it ever since and was tested for thrush. I know you can get gut flora changes which can cause differences but nothing ever seems to make it normal. I know its bacteria as I had a sinus infection and had to take more antibiotics and tongue went clear when I was on them. Also get the typical IBS symptoms such as trapped gas, aches, pains etc.

Dentist always says normal but it never used to be like this. Just wondered if anyone has experienced anything like it? I always look at it as a state of my IBS as it seems to worsen when my bowls play up.

I agree about the probiotics. I get oral thrush fairly easily. I thought I had it again and took fluconazole, but it didn't help. It's not real white, but feels coated. I'm still trying to figure it out.
Also......there's "hairy tongue". I had that once too and the ENT had me take antibiotics and it cleared it up. I can't remember if it then caused me to get thrush.

You could also try to decrease your sugar and other carb intake. I think some of us grow yeast more easily with carbs than others.

You also might look up which vitamins and minerals might help with tongue health.

Basically there's some correlation between people with significant gut issues and mouth-health problems (I'm generalising, but not hard to find academic literature and clinical studies). There can be a lot of variables, so it will depend on the individual. And yeah, gut microbiome is one factor. Honestly though... a lot of tongue irritation is just caused by reflux and mouth dryness. Anti-biotics cause irritation, including reflux, because you're now lacking the bacteria you were relying on to break-down your foods. Often it will go back to normal with time, but changing your diet could be beneficial if you're feeling (understandably) impatient.
