Last year in August 2023 I decided to try melatonin as a sleep aid and bought a CVS brand 5mg bottle. The pills also contained 10mg of Vitamin B6 and 80mg of calcium (dicalcium phosphate). I started taking one pill August 8 and it seemed to help. I decided to take one pill every night and was sleeping so much better. However, after about a week I started experiencing problems with gas, bloating, and explosive watery diarrhea. I thought it was some temporary issue from food, etc., but it persisted and I became suspicious that it could be the melatonin. I researched online for any user comments expressing the same problems and found this site and forum. That is when I decided to stop taking the melatonin (Aug. 22), and by Aug. 25 I was pretty much back to normal. I am so glad I came across this forum and read the comments from others who had the same reaction/symptoms. One of my sisters takes 5mg melatonin, sometimes two pills, each night and has had no problems. She uses a Natrol brand that is "fast dissolve" and has no Vitamin B6 or calcium like my brand did. I could try that brand, but have decided to just avoid melatonin all together.
