Question on BM and mucus

I was wondering if anyone had similar observation. When I have BM, I notice some stringy possibly dark mucus on stool. Closer inspection shows that "string" is only on surface and can be removed with toilet tissue. Once removed, it takes on more of an opaque color or possibly yellow. When mixed with feces, the color may be a brownish yellow. Sorry for being so graphic. I suspect IBS as I have other classic symptoms but wanted to rule out something more serious in my own mind. Please help as I am a bit of a hypochrondiac to begin with and I am looking for some peace. THANK YOU ALL!

Mucus is very common with IBS. You should really only be alarmed if it is dark (like black) or red as this can be a sign of bleeding. If you haven't officially been diagnosed with IBS, you should see a doctor; a lot of other things can masqeurade as IBS. If you ever have really weird poops, that just defy explanation or description and have a digital camera, just take a picture! Show that to your doctor and see if what he thinks about it. Doctors used to personally check a person's stools looking for clues as to what problem they had, so it's nothing really new; just lacks the smell!

Ya, I've had more than enough bouts of mucus. While on vacation I suffered some serious C and on the 5th day I passed only mucus... and a LOT of it. I was scared to death, but had no one to talk to... thank God nothing else happened! A little mucus once in a while is not a big deal, but if you notice it after almost every BM, and it's quite prevalent, then you might want to get that checked out.

Thank you all for your replies. Actually, it is not the mucus that concerns me as much as the color. Mine is clear or sometimes yellow. Occasionally, it seems to mix with stool and takes on a brownish yellow tint. Also have internal hemorrhoids which could cause sloughing off of blood. (pinkish mucus). Last colonoscopy was 5 years ago and was okay except for the tiniest of polyps.(one) Any input appreciated. Thanks.

I've heard people say that their mucus is anywhere from clear to yellow to brown. Seems like anything that colors your poop can color your mucus too. It all gets mixed in there together.

Sometimes yellow poop/mucus can be a sign of excess bile in your system. Bile can also appear, in some people, as greenish.

I would think that as long as you're not seeing red or pink, you are fine. Most everyone with IBS passes mucus - especially a yellow-ish/brown color.
Have you brought this up to your doc?
