scared to hvae colonscopy

i was thniking abuot the coloncsopy thta my gi said i hvae to hvae. i am a bit worried abuot it as last time wehn i had the sidcopsy done i fuod it painful. i aslo found thta the sedation had worn off so i was arwe of everything thye were doing. wehn thye took the biospy i screamed as it was so painful. why does it seem to hurt me and everyone esle on here says it doesn't hurt? i am nerous thta the sedation wont work again. i aslo fuond thta the enerma thye gave me didnt clear me out and thye had to try and pass around the stool still left inside.

i am just so fed up wiht being pocked. everytime i go i hvae to be examined. i am sure thye enjoy shoving things up my bum and do it just for fun.

Please try not to worry. I know its easier said than done, but if you try and stay relaxed during the procedure it is easier and more comfortable. Talk to the doctor before the procedure and explain how you felt last time and that the sedation wasn't enough. The doctor can maybe use some local anaesthetic jelly before he starts and maybe give you slightly more sedation. Believe me, they don't do this for fun and they do these things every day. Please do not worry and talk to the doctor or nurse about how you are feeling before you have the procedure done.

The worst part of getting a Colonoscopy is the prep.You will be asleep when they do the procedure.It's a piece of cake,I've had 2...........

Talk to your doctor the next time you go in for one, and explain that the sedation wore off in the middle of the procedure the last time. They always start with the smallest dose of sedative that they can, because it is supposed to be conscious sedation, so you can still sort of follow commands... some people just need a little bit more than others. Take my mom for example - she's been having kidney stones for the past year, and she had a particularly bad attack at Christmas. She took 2 Demerol and 2 phenergan orally, and then had an IM shot of both at the doctor's office - that's a TON of demerol and phenergan - and she was still fairly lucid. She didn't remember what she said, but she was walking fine, and talking (just slurring her words a little.) I was amazed. But some people just have a higher tolerance for meds.
Just explain the situation to your doctor, and what kind of prep did you do the last time?

I think you mentioned sigmoidoscopy. They don't sedate for that other than sometimes a little valium if the patient is nervous. With a colonscopy you should be out of it so you don't feel anything. I had one where they didnt give me enough and I was fully awake and yes, it was very painful but Dr. said he was afraid to give me sedation because of bad lungs. Of course he had just knocked me out the month before for endoscopy. Anyway, new Dr. keeps me sedated so I feel nothing but am awake the minute it is over. Make sure you tell the Dr. you do not want to feel anything.

I think they have more fun things to do than shove that up your butt.

i had sedation for it as i had a carmrea put down my throat as well. i was out for thta but thne woke up just as thye were taking a biopsy and thne pulling it out. i was thne awake for most of the sidcopsy. over in my hospital thye do sedate you but only ligthly. i was told thta i wouldnt no anything thta happened. i just wanna be out for it so i dont know waht thye are doing.

Hi, Oneday.  I had a majorly hard time to clear myself out for the colonoscopy.  But I WAS able to do it.  I took 4 dulcolax for a few days in a row and then used their prep called HalfLytely.  I ONLY overdosed on these laxatives because they told me to since I was so constipated.

The procedure did NOT hurt at all.  So I really think you'll be fine.  Good luck!!

Don't worry about a colonoscopy.  They will not do the procedure  until you are completely cleaned out.  They're very strict about that.  You must be completely cleaned out.  You will also be totally asleep when they do the procedure.  You won't feel a thing.  The colonoscopy is done in a hospital, not a doctor's office.  The hospital has very strict rules about this.  The procedure thats done in the doctor's office is useless and outdated .  Thats the  sigmoidoscopy

Hi, the sigmoidoscopy is painful...they don't give you much sedative. For the colonoscopy, you are out of it and you shouldn't feel anything. That is why you have to have a ride home. I know it is scarey but the worst thing is the prep. (I am sure they do it for the money and not for fun, lol!) I am 61 and will have my third colonscopy in July. By the way the docs do have to justify all these exams in order for insurance to pay for them...so it is not a whimsical whim on their part.

I just wanted to mention real quick that I did not have my scopes done in a hospital. They were outpatient procedures at a clinic. So oneday, don't worry if you don't get sent to a big hospital for your scope (although I don't know how things differ in the UK).

thnak yuo i hvae to go into hopstial for thme on a day bases. at least gi is nice if she going to do thme.

Your GI should definitely be the person to do your scope, so you have that much less to worry about!

Ours are done at the outpatient surgery centers around town not at the hospital but they do a lot of proceedures there of different kinds. Only a gastro dr. would do these.

Joan M, bye the way, what is a sigmoidoscopy?  I am only 34, but I've had a colonoscopy, endoscopy, PH-testing......Just sharing my age because I saw that you did! :))
