Does anyone get rectal mucous?

Does anyone here ever get rectal mucous? I don't mean in a bowel movement, but sometime after it?

I sometimes get mucus instead of a bowel movement. I feel as though I need to go to the toilet but it can sometimes be just mucus alone.

Thanks for the response. It really helps to know I'm not the only one who gets this. Do you have any idea how often this happens to you? I could get it a few times a week. Also, were you ever diagnosed with IBS, or any other digestive disorder?

Mucus is definitely common with IBS. Sometimes it's with the stool, sometimes it's mucus alone.  Sometimes it's clear, sometimes it has a brown tint.
Have you been diagnosed with IBS? Do you have any other symptoms?

Thanks so much for your reply. In answer to your question, I have not been diagnosed with IBS by a physician, but from the online research I have done, it seems to fit most closely with that ailment. I am scheduled to have my first colonoscopy on May 4th, so maybe I will know definitively at that time. My other symptoms were gas, incomplete evacuation, small, hard stools sometimes, and normal ones on others. At any rate, for the past five days I have made some dietary changes, and guess what? NO MUCOUS, no gas, no symptoms at all. I stopped having the large amounts of cheeses I have always consumed, stopped drinking all soda, stopped drinking coffee, stopped eating chocolate (and that's a biggie), and started drinking water. I'm mentioning all these things with the hope that they might help you and others suffering from IBS.

I have this all of the time. 

 

Mucus is problem with my IBS-D.  It freaked me out at first, but it's almost like it's "normal" for me now.  Sometimes, it's all I pass.  Gross, I know, but true! 

Sometimes the mucus is clear, sometimes, it is a light brown. (Gross, again.)

 

What causes mucus in IBS-D anyway??  Is it due to overactive colon motility?  I always read that passing mucus is caused by inflammation, but I thought there was no inflammation with IBS-D.  So...what causes mucus overproduction in IBS-D??

Excess mucus in IBS is caused by the intense spasming of the colon. When you have contractions of the colon, the mucus is secreted and allows smooth passage of stool. In normal people, this is done also but only a small amount is shed but with IBS the contractions and because they are more intense causes more mucus to shed which in turns is why you are passing so much.

The mucus in IBD (Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis) is from the pus from the ulcers which is different from IBS mucus. You will usually see blood mixed in with that kind. That is maybe why you heard that mucus is from inflammation.

Thanks Des!  Yes, this does make sense now. 

When you say "spasms" of the colon...would they feel like a frequent "pain" to move your bowels?  Kind of like "I have to go RIGHT NOW!" kind of feeling?  I feel like this almost every morning when I wake up from a nights sleep.  This "feeling" never wakes me up at night, but as soon as I wake up...in 5 minutes, I'm feeling the "urge" to "go" right NOW.  Is this a "spasm"?  (Then, I have diarhea after these bowel feelings.  Nearly every morning.)  It's a never ending circle. 

My GERD is also messed up.  It's almost like I have too much acid in my stomach and I burp all of the time.  I know I have GERD from the EGD that I had last summer. 

Can IBS-D and GERD go hand-in-hand?  Or, have you heard of people that deal with both of these problems at the same time?

Everyone has contractions of the colon, that is how the waste is moved along in the intestines. In IBS, these contractions can be stronger which does in fact cause pain. More frequent contractions can cause the stool to expel faster through the colon which in turn is why many IBSers have diarrhea. It can cause cramping and the feeling that you need to go immediately. This is why true IBS is called a functional disorder. The function of your colon is impaired.

GERD is a different disorder however IBS and GERD are frequently seen together.

Just want all of you fellow-sufferers to know that this is my sixth day without dairy products, cola, and chocolate. This is also my sixth day without rectal mucous. Hope this information will help at least some of you. Good luck.

Colon/rectal doctor thinks I've got IBS-D since he can't find anything else wrong. This is so bad. There are some days when it is absolutely terrible. Always a feeling that I have not finished in the bathroom. I've got rectal pain. I've got rectal mucus, sometimes thats all I have when I go to the bathroom. I don't know what to eat or what not to eat. I'm afraid to go too far from home. Mornings are the worst. I can't go too far from the bathroom. I take over the counter anti-diarrhea medication. Then I'm constipated for a day or two. It seems like I'm on a gerbil wheel and I can't get off.
