about four months ago, I had a colonoscopy that showed inflammation in the folds of the colon, small bowel enlarged, and my stomach full of bile. Some of you may remember this or not. I had further tests done due to GI having suspicions of chrohn's from results of colonoscopy. My small bowel series revealed rapid transit and another test that they ran barium through a tube in my nose revealed zero negative abnormalities. The GI said that since they were negative, it must be IBS. He did not try any meds except for creon. I was on it for while but did not see any significant improvement. I had different blood tests checked for food allergy and stool samples have been done. He did not follow-up anymore with me. about a month ago, I started with the same symptoms as earlier right before I had my colonoscopy. I called the GI and the nurse said since it's just IBS, you can follow-up with your regular MD. The MD put me on prevacid solutab 30mg. It helps some, but I have this pain alot on my right side and alot especially after eating. I also feel pain on the right side of my back. I don't understand it. I still wake up in the mornings with such a sick feeling. Sometimes I will feel feverish and have nausea. Also, around December my Lipase level was elevated but then did resume normal after repeat test. I just have not felt the same since. I was having so much anxiety about this whole thing that the MD though I should take Ativan. I only take it when I sleep which does help. I would appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks!

Sounds like you need an abdominal ultrasound and HIDA scan.  Gallbladder problems very frequently cause URQ pain that radiates to the back, nausea, feverishness, etc.  Did you ever have these done before?

If you had abnormalities on several tests in the past, even if your enteroclysis (with the tube down the nose) was negative, you should definitely get a second opinion.  Even if it's IBS, a GI should be able to follow you; that's what they are there for!

Thanks for the reply. I have had my gallbladder removed and appendix. The GI I was going to said he could not figure it out. he said one thing but that tests proved different and then said oh well. I remember him calling me at home saying that he could not figure out why I had all that bile in my stomach. Thanks!

Have you tried Welchol? That absorbs bile specifically--at least in the intestines. I don't know if it would work as high up as the stomach, but it's worth a try, I guess. You don't absorb it, so it has no side-effects except constipation--although it will interfere with the absobtion of certain other meds, like for the thyroid. My GI's nurse said that when you get your gall bladder out, your bile will drip out somewhere--either it will back up into the stomach or go down into the intestines. Which explains why my mother has constant heartburn and I have D if I'm not on the Welchol.

And unless you are having C problems, also try taking the Caltrate 600 w/ vitmain D. I am convinced that excess bile in the colon irritates it; I know when I started taking the calcium, all of my bad bowel problems stopped--including the pain. I think I had gotten my colon irritated due to a combination of an allergic reaction to sugar alcohols and excess bile. Calcium has been shown to soothe minor irritations in the colon.

I do agree with Sarita that you need to get a second opinion, though, because inflammation in the colon is rarely good, much less enlargement. While it's possible that the bile is causing the irritation, I can't imagine that it's causing the enlargement too. That sounds suspicious.
