I had an emergancy c-section 2 and half years ago to deliver my daughter, and afterwards they said I would experience some quite bad wind, which I did, but it has crossed my mind that this may have been a trigger? My friend also had one and she also suffers IBS it may sound silly as I was only diagnosed a week ago but my symptoms have been here for a couple of years, I was wondering if anyone else has had the operation or other abdominal surgery? Get back to me if you have, it may be a total coinsidence that my friend and I have both had c-sections and now both suffer with IBS, but because at the moment there is no definate known cause it has interested me, and I am eager to find out

Hi Princess, That is an interesting theory, unfortunately I cannot attest to it since I had a vaginal birth. I'm also curious to hear what others have to say on this.

Thamkyou for showing your interest I probably sound totally barmy but I want to get to the bottom of this as my doctor is pretty lame and sent me packing with a box of fibogel and told me to avoid this, that and the other, I didn't even get that much information off him, as he didn't offer it and seemed pretty rushed too. So it looks like I only have myself to rely on and anyone who may have any helpful tips on here, so thankyou

It may not have been the C-Section itself, but the birth. We have found out here that hormones play a BIG role in your bowel function. And having a baby can alter your hormones (and body overall) quite a bit, and they may never go back to the way they were before. My mother used to have cats. Then she got pregnant with me and became violently allergic to them (she had to take breathing treatments if she's around them too long) and she's been that way ever since. In fact, she's allergic to a lot of things now that she didn't used to be allergic to before she got pregnant with me. So if that could happen to her, I don't see why both you and your friend couldn't have bowel problems post-baby.

The other thing that may have happened is scar tissue around your muscles and uterus which are interfering with your bowels. We have had a lady on here who had a lot of female problems and related surgeries and the scar tissue has been listed as a possible cause of her severe bowel problems.
