Is a calicum supplement known to constipate?

Yes, some more than others as some are recommended to take if you have diahrea.

Thank You. I did find that if calcium is combined w/ Magnesium it can prevent constipation because magnesium in high amts can work as a laxative and calcium carbonate is the calcium that tends to constipate more. I was perfect w/ my amitiza until I took a couple of calcium pills last tuesday and I have been irregular since. The amitiza did produce a bowel movement everyday up until the calcium consumption and now I am not having a bowel movement everyday. I did find out that calcium binds to the intenstines. Not really sure how to fix the problem. Was considering on doing a cleansing or maybe time will correct itself.

I thought it was the calcium citrate because people recommended Citrical to prevent diahrea. I just started again on calcium carbonate and have been constipated. Maybe I could just add some Pepto or Maalox and work it out. I have to do something about
my bones.

Try getting a calcium that has magnesium in it. 400 mgs of magnesium or more. Magnesium is a laxative and it also helps calcium asborb better. A good one to get is Tri Boron Plus which is calcium carbonate w/ Magnesium.

I take calcium to help stop diarrhea and also because not only is it good for bones but also helps prevent bowel cancer.
Green vegetables usually contain a lot of calcium, which is now known to help prevent bowel cancer, so it's not just the fact that they are high in fibre. That's why it's important to eat and drink dairy products too. I'm lactose intolerant, like a lot of people, and I've learnt that low-fat or skim milk actually makes the problem worse. Apparently the fat globules slow down ingestion of lactose and low-fat dairy products allow lactose to be absorbed too rapidly, which most people's bodies can't cope with.
I'm fed up with all the so-called "healthy" food making me sick!

You can buy lacatose free milk and many people use milk that way. My gastro said that would be OK but it is also something else in milk that people can't digest. I don't remember what it was. I use Almond Breeze instead of milk and it has Calcium, Vit D in it and it tastes good. Much better than soy milk. Rice milk is not too bad but I think the Almond has more vitamins and fewer calories.

I had severe lactose intolerance issues but no longer thanks to the primadophilus reuteri probiotic that I take daily which also benefits my crohns, IBS, high cholesterol and also aids with vaginal health too.

I appreciate everyone's response. I think I am going to stay w/ my calcium with magnesium. I have read that magnesium can act as a laxative and it also helps calcium absorb better

Activa is for both and I can tell you it really helped me.
I would go 3 days of no BM and then 3 days of D. It was horrible. My body was not digesting food properly. THe docs said I had IBS/Ibd, and the gave me prescript
ion pills for the pain and cramping I would have every single time I ate. I suffered for almost 2 years. Every meal I ate felt like I was food poisened. could not eat much for food. Everything had to be bland. Like white rice and baked chicken for the last 2 years.
I tryed Activa and the first 3-5 days I did not notice a difference. BM were still loose. I still ate one everyday and now I have been on it for 1 month. I feel like a million bucks!!!! I go the same time everyday now and its normal and there is no pain associated with it. My mood has improved and I am ten times happier then I've ever been. I can finally go out to restaraunt with my boyfriend and eat from the menu without worring. Just only regret I tried this sooner so I would not have to suffer.
And I can eat anything I want now. I might gain alot of weight at this rate. The foods that I would have to avoid before I can now eat with ease....
Like Pizza, ice cream, soda, chocolate, pudding, chips, sandwiches, an occasional beer OMG the list goes on.....
