Hi I am new here...

I have been diagnosed with IBS. I had a CT with contrast of abdomen and pelvis- unremarkable. I took in a small stool sample which was MOSTLY mucous... NO Fecal occult blood....

since then I have had off and on diarrhea, mixed with more solid yet MUCOUS COVERED stools. Now I am experiencing left sided lower abdominal pain, not just after eating and bowel movements it is very tender to the touch and it feels like there is a big ball of something in there causing pain and pressure...IT HURTS...I have a high pain tolerance normally but am very concerned... I was also diagnosed with duodenitis spelling??? sorry

1.Am I the only one with ALOT of mucous??? ALOT???

2. Is anyone else ever tender to the touch on their abdomen...is this a symptom of IBS or should I be more concerned...

3. My Family doc does not seem to think that I need colonoscopy...would you have one or just take her advice???

4. Are these even symptoms of IBS????

ask for a Colonoscopy to satisfy you,besides every one should have at least one.
I had all what you do,but since I eat better & leave off the bad foods I'm doing alo better.No one ever died from IBS unless they refused to face it & take care of it........

How were you diagnosed with duodenitis? Was that based on the CT?

Mucous is a normal part of your digestive tract and some people just have more than others; however, with other symptoms, it warrants a closer look. You might go back to your FP and express your concerns about the amount of pain and mucous. From there, she would send you to a gastroenterologist, who would do the scope.

P.S. Snowy, no one has ever died from IBS, period. It is a functional disorder. People die from complications of other things, but not IBS! Just trying to clarify that to quell any anxieties about it :)

I was diagnosed by an upper GI X Ray...with the duodenitis. 

Is anyone ever sore to the touch with their IBS?

They should have done an upper endoscopy if you were diagnosed with duodenitis from a small bowel series. Did they ever say you needed one? Similar to a colonoscopy but the tube goes down from your mouth into your stomach and slightly further (into the duodenum). Were you ever treated for it, or did they figure out what was causing it?

Yes, some IBS patients do have tenderness to the touch, but without a scope you can't be sure if you have IBS or not. IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning all other possibilities need to be ruled out first.

I didn't know an xray would show that. Mine didn't show on CT scan with contrast so surprised it would show on an xray. Mine was done by endoscopy and I was told it was from too much acid. I had many hyperplastic polyps which as also called pseudo polyps. Due for my next endo in Feb. Actually overdo. Best we can do is try and stop acid production as much as possible as unlike stomach polyps these cannot be removed but also are not as dangerous.

Have you been to your gyno to make sure that you aren't having ovarian cysts or endometreosis? Also, unfortunately, ovarian cancer mimics IBS in disrupting your bowels and giving you pains (the other two things I mentioned also do this). Make sure your gyno looks you over and gives you a clean bill of health as well. I had an aunt with ovarian cancer at age 50ish, and luckily they caught it in time. But she was having pains and bowel problems too.

Also, after that, you might want to see an allergist. While the mucus may just be IBS being IBS, sometimes if you have a food allergy, you can generate excess mucus, just like your nose runs when it's introduced to pollen or mold or cat hair or whatever it is you're allergic to.

I have the same lower left abdomen pain.
and it feels like there is a hard ball in there.
My gyno doc said it could be that because I am "small framed" the ovary it closer to my intestines and thats what is causing the pain time to time. and I have scaring on that ovary. Makes sence, a couple of years ago I had a Laporoscopy for an ovarian cyst causing me pain.

Then my GI doc said it could be because I had I C-Section and that there is scarring inside me.

I had a colonoscopy done and there was a little bit of trouble getting the scope up my intestenial track, because of the scarring inside me.

Dawn, something that happened to my mom was that she developed a fybroid tumor that attached itself to her intestines. If you've had fybroid problems, or have that kind of scarring, you might want to get an ultasound or something like that to make sure that you don't have scarring that's not grown to the point that it needs to be removed. My mother's tumor was strangling her intestines. The weird thing was she had had a hysterectomy like 10 years before. The doctor scratched his head and said that maybe a piece of endometreosis was left in there and the tumor grew on that. It was nothing like he had ever heard about. They took both of her ovaries out at the same time and they were so covered in cysts, they weren't functioning anymore. She actually felt better afterwards and especially when she got on some hormones that she had been lacking before.
