Hello,
I am new to this forum, and have been reading the previous posts. I have pain behind the lower rib on my right side. I had an Endoscopy and a Colonoscopy, HIDA Scan, blood tests - normal. I had a more recent Endoscopy last month. I also have Gastritis. Other than that, I've been watching what I eat, but my PA wants to refer me to surgery to have my Gallbladder removed. I am skeptical about
the surgery "after effects" because some folks end up with chronic diarrhea. I would not want to live with that! If they remove your Gallbladder, they remove the organ that holds the bile produced by the liver, so without something to hold the bile, and release when needed; it goes directly into your intestines, causing irritation. I'd have a lot of problems with that.
I have explained to my PA that my Gallbladder releases too much bile at times, when there is a trigger (i.e. eating something that irritates my GI system) and that I am not able to digest food fats very well. In my opinion; my Pancreas is not releasing the necessary enzymes to break down food fats, my Gallbladder is releasing too much bile, and it ends up in my intestines. Thus, loose stools, cramps and diarrhea.
MSG is a huge trigger, as well as Carrageenan. MSG is also sold on store shelves where the spices are. It's a flavor enhancer, not a spice - an "excitotoxin" that tricks your brain into believing that you need to eat more of the foods you eat, and is sold as ACCENT or AJINOMOTO. It's also making us fat! You will also find it mixed in powdered spices such as crab boil, and in BBQ sauces, but remember, it's not a spice.
I am back to 119 lbs. after being ill for almost two months, and on a paleo-style diet. Afraid to eat much of anything else that may cause me any distress.
I have started reading lots of food labels, after a lot of trial and error; I narrowed it down to those two things. I am checking my fridge and pantry, and avoiding fast-food (they put MSG in their liquid shortening), restaurants (the stuff can already be in there), and watching what I eat. MSG is found in many processed foods, frozen foods, chips, processed lunch meats, sausage, bacon, pizzas, broths, Chinese foods, Ramen soups, some beers. MSG is listed on some food labels as "natural flavor(s)."
Carrageenan is a stabilizer and is found in some brands of ice creams, sour creams, non-dairy coffee creamers, custards, puddings, some Almond milks, canned pet foods, etc. Check and read the labels! Carrageenan is much cheaper than Guar Gum, Locust Bean, or Gelatin, which were used to emulsify and thicken foods. The FDA allows food manufacturers to put this junk in our foods because it's cheap. Carrageenan is also found in aircraft de-icers. Yikes! Neither MSG nor Carrageenan have any nutritional value. It could be food-grade or non-food grade, it can and does end up in our foods! Who is going to check? The FDA? As long as the food manufacturers give them money, and free spa treatments, who cares?
I would keep a diary of what I have eaten in the past couple of days, and check the labels. Check your pantries. Organic foods may have MSG, or Carrageenan - as both are "natural." Also, some fruits and vegetables are sprayed with liquid MSG before being sold in markets. Do a little research. I ended up with flu-like symptoms, and my Gallbladder feels like it's being squeezed, cramps and burning in my stomach, tingly feeling in my extremities, rapid heart beat, my tongue feels strange and tingly, tightening of my throat, and numbing of my lips, sweating and flushing, nausea - lightheaded and about
to black out from the distress. A lot of inflammation and irritation of my GI system. My intestines hurt, and sting. I've been feeling much better since I've been checking the labels of foods I eat, and actually controlling what goes into my foods.
I would like to know how those who've had their Gallbladder removed, have been coping, and if positive or negative? Is your life better than it was before surgery, and was it the answer? Thank you for all the information I can use to learn and compare to my symptoms. I still do not want to have my GB removed. I do not believe that it's the answer.
