Kidney Stone? Cancer?

I had this twice: Terrible pain, urine very red with something fibrous in it. Cipro takes care of it immediately. I got a note today and my gynecologist thinks it's kidney stones or cancer. She wants me to get further testing. It's real scary to think of having another illness along with this chronic pain.
Anybody have any ideas. I think I may be posting this in the wrong place. Can't think right today. Stress and worry I think.

Hi Pamela,
To be honest, I'm not sure exactly where you should be posting... But, it's no big deal you stopped by here. This site is all about support and we can sure do that here in IBS.
Pain and blood in the urine can be caused by so many things: kidney stones, UTI's, viral infections, medications, random kidney inflammation, strenuous exercise, sometimes even no cause is found... etc., etc.
I know this is easier said than done, but try not to worry too much about it just yet. Given that the antibiotic you have taken twice before has helped you, there is a pretty good chance you just got some type of infection (viral maybe).
Go for the further testing and try to keep a positive attitude. Good luck!

I cannot say how happy I was to hear from you. Doctors don't have time to give a full story of their findings. I understand that. It's kinda up to us to find our way through the medical maze. I am thankful for this forum.

P.S. BTW, I am an "expert" about IBS. Though I don't have it now, I had it terrible about 8 years ago. It went away for the most part but during the time I had it, I couldn't go of the house for a couple of years. (D type)

Wow, did you do anything--diet change, holistic medicine--or take anything--medicine, fiber--to help the IBS, or did it just vanish as mysteriously as it came?

Kidney stones are a lot more common than kidney cancer, so while I would get looked at by a uriologist, I'd not be overly worried just yet. Especially since you seem to have a history of some sort of urinary tract/kidney infection.

know where the bathroom is when I'm in a
store.
I carry supplies in the back of the car.

Ouch ouch ouch, blood in the urine is never pleasant...and neither are the tests they run to rule out all of the nasties. My thoughts are with you. Kidneys are very weird organs indeed, and having bloody urine can be a sign of about 928347 things - some of them relatively benign, others not - so I am glad you are getting the testing and I hope it does not turn out to be very serious, for your sake. Keep us updated, and stay strong!
