I struggle with IBS-D (due to cancer, colon resection, possibly having my gall bladder out as well). One of the many things I tried, was a retraining of my bowels. My colon doc gave me a guidesheet to try. Her thinking was I'd have one big dump a day (like I used to before having part of my colon removed), not the numerous small ones I have now, all day long. Anyway, here's what I tried for breakfast each day:
Bowl of bran cereal (the high fiber type). You can add fruit for added fiber and/or taste.
Coffee
1 or 2 tall glasses of water
After this, I drank citrus flavored Metamucil, in 4 ounces of water.
Next, I inserted a pediatric suppository. Since she knew I struggled with D, I think that's why she wanted me to try a mild suppository.
Well, I ended up being in the bathroom for 5 hours each time I ate and drank this way. It was all just too much. My doctor had hoped my gut would get used to this large amount of stool coming thru each morning and this in time would be the time of day I'd have #2's.
This routine did not work for me. But you could at least try the bran cereal. It's not bad. You have to chew a lot (this is the type cereal that comes in small boxes and each piece is about
an inch long, dark brown, loads of fiber in this type).
