Okay, So I have been diagnosed with IBS and Acid Reflux.  And I have been having terrible pain in the upper right side of my abdomen.  It hurts so bad that it goes all the way through to my back and up my neck, and then gives me a terrible head ache as well.  I had an ultrasound on my gallbladder and a Hidascan.  Plus an upper GI.  They only found that I have Acid Reflux.  So the pain is still there even though I am on medicine for the reflux.  And lately when the pain comes it is much more intense and spreads throughout almost my entire body.  Then about eight hours later I will have terrible cramps and terrible diareah.  What is this?  I am convinced that it is my gallbladder but my MD says he cant find anything.  Anyone have any advice or suggestions?  Or has anyone had this happen to them?  Thanks so much, I gotta run... to the bathroom again.

That sounds somewhat what is happening to me. I'm not going to be of much help since I'm still going through tests to get a diagnosis. I had an ultra sound, still haven't gotten results yet, and tested negative for ulcers. Doc keeps prescribing meds for acid reflux, but my insurance refuses to cover them so I haven't started taking them to see if they help. My pain is where my liver is and I think I might have polycystic liver like my dad since he has an extremely severe case of it and its supposed to be hereditary. My pain starts there real bad, then I have cramping in my lower abdomen followed by an extreme urge to pass a movement. The movements are not always diahrrea or lose, sometimes hard. I also seem to have bloat and gas from both ends and my right side of my abdomen sticks out a little further than left.

Just know you aren't alone in this.

Hi thirstyforchrist, I unfortunately have similiar problem. I have ibs pain is under ribs sometimes or travels to stomach or both. sometimes i have bad spasms in stomach. i do have pain in middle of back going down to end of back. sometimes going around side to back. the pain is excruciating at times. i have been to one gi he has done tests n i was told it was ibs. i have to b honest i wanted something else to b wrong with me, because it doesnt make any sense to me. I have other things that r related to ibs like gastritis, inflammation of esophagus. i am mostly constipated. my questions to you is did they do a full examination? bloodwork, test of feces. are you under a lot of stress? r u eating healthy? both of these can trigger ibs. i know because it has happened to me. I am still trying to figure it out myself. i hope this has helped you if at all a little bit. best of luck to you...hugsss lora.

Think I had a full workup. I cant really remember. But this is awful. I also wanted something else to be wrong just so they could fix it. If a surgery would do it, I would be all for it. I cant stand this. It's happening every single day and I have tried changing my eating habits but it seems like the healthier I eat, the worse I feel. That is so crazy! I dont know what to do. It hurts so bad and especially at night and at work. What do yall do to get through it? Any medicines help? It seems like I have taken everything and nothing stops this pain. I need something!!! But thanks again for your support!

I'm still a newbie with IBS myself, but I know you are really stressed at the moment hun, that never helps, trust me!! I'll be back to see if anyone has some advice for the both of us. I try all different things but my Doc will not prescribe me anything stronger than over-the counter advice ...frustrating!! (I can't deal with caffienne at all - I'm up all night - griping pain - youch).

Had the same problems for five years. Eventually I got a THIRD hida scan to confirm, wow, it had been my gall bladder all along.

Duh. My mother and I knew what was wrong with me from month number 2; didn't need 5 years to figure it out. All I can recommend is keep getting tested if you are convinced that's the problem. I can attest with 100% certainty that tests are not always right.

Caffeine was also my number one trigger, Nervy Meg. And up in the middle of the night with it. Do you pace the floor?

I try to avoid all types of carbination. I've noticed that not only does it increase my gas from sip #1, it also upsets my stomach and starts giving me all sorts of pain. During my last bout of D I took Maalox(sp) and Pepto Bismo which seemed to help a little. I think I remember somewhere reading a list of foods that is supposed to help releave D and actually make you a little C. I can't remember for the life of me what the foods were except the high fiber ones.... Now I kinda remember, my doc said to eat more fiber like apples and try Metamusel or something similar to that. Hope that helps.

Thanks yall, I took some immodium for the diarreah and now I'm totally stopped up. AHHH! This is awful. I dont know how to get regular. I am so tired of this. And I can't help but think that I might have brought it all on myself. I had an eating disorder in middle school that totally stunted my growth and messed my body up. Then I kindof went through it again after I had my son two years ago. But I'm eating normal and healthier now. And still, this keeps happening. Is it not curable?

I used to pace the floors all night and then go out and get a jumbo bucket of coffee to get me through the day..dumb! I don't have coffee anymore, but I am wondering, both my parents had their gall bladders out, will this give me relief? I would get a foot cut off right know to stop this pain...does it help or is it a side effect??? I have a doc who gives me no advice, just peppermint oil..

Hmm, I don't expect cutting off a foot would help at all, but as for getting your GB out, it totally got rid of my pain. I still have to be careful about my diet and I take medicine for diarreha, but overall I'm a good deal better than I was, and of the other people on here, have fewer problems overall than most. Not perfection, but improvement.

BTW, bad gall bladders run in families!

That being said, I have seen a small number of people who continue to have pain after having their GBs removed. Either because the GB wasn't their only problem, or their bile ducts were damaged either removing the GB (rare, but a possibility in any surgery) or they were scarred up previously due to cysts or something like that.

Thirsty, I am very sensitive to Immodium myself. Even though it says on the package to take two, I take no more than 1/2 of one pill at a time! I suggest you start out with this too. Take 1/2 of one pill, wait 20-30 minutes and if you still feel any hint of an urge to go, take the other half. If you frequently need to take 2 halves, then you know that you need one pill and that will do the trick. But start with 1/2 like I use. Or switch to Pepto Bismol pills. I took those off and on for years and they never constipated me.

I did get extrememly constipated after taking just one tiny pill! I didn't go for four days! ANd then I still had horrible stinky gas! I hate this and I would too cut off a foot, even sacrifice my stilletos, for some relief. I feel awful. But maybe I will feel better soon. Has anyone heard of Dicyclonmine? My MD gave me this without explination. He said take it as needed. For what though? D or C or both? I'm so confused!

Dicyclomine is generic for Bently, which is an antispasmodic. It should help decrease your cramping, which in turn, might help with D (not always though, it could just help the pain associated with cramps/spasms).
As you've already experienced, Imodium can be extremely constipating. I found the extra strength pills to work too well... Like Keri, I take 1/2 of 1 pill when I feel the D come on (or for preventative measures). Recently I discovered the normal strength chewables that are significantly less effective... I'm able to chew a full pill with little to moderate effects.
