cpkr4me- I'm new to this group, too. I haven't read too many of the postings, yet, but just browsing, I find that very few people out there are talking about diet. Some of the best information I've researched points to a gluten-free diet as a good place to start. Elaine Gottschall was a biologist who did tons of research on the effect of food on digestive tract functioning and behavior. She developed the Specific Carbohydrate Diet which is VERY strict in limiting starches, carbs, sugars, etc. which are difficult to digest. Her book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle is excellent. There is also a lot of info out there on gluten as it rellates to behaviors in Autism and other neurogical disorders. I follow a gluten-free diet, which is strict, but definitely do-able. Since last April, I've been on a soy-free, (allergies), gluten-free, dairy-free diet, and my symptoms are negligible. The hardest part is eating out at a restaurant or pot-luck, as the diet is so strict. But, I can LIVE my life again. I'm also researching enzymes, as from what I've learned, I don't have normal enzyme activity in my gut, so can't break down the polypeptides in order for normal absorption to occur. I really don't think the average physician is a nutrition expert, and is so quick to medicate. Another nutrition expert who has been helpful is Pam Popper of The Wellness Forum. Truly- the diet saved my life! I'm convinced there will be a lot less IBS out there as people try getting totally away from all gluten (wheat, oats, barley, rye). Good luck!
