This is a great breakthrough; they've found that they can catch a lot of GI cancers by merely sampling a stool specimen. It caught 100% of colon and rectal cancers and no less than 65% of other GI tract cancers, and had not false positives in the healthy group. Given that there's no good way to test for cancers in the GI tract, other than a colonoscopy, which can only look at part of the colon, this will catch many more cancers, earlier, and will be non-invasive.
I wish this had been around a decade ago; I have a friend, in his mid-40's, with terminal colon cancer. He was misdiagnosed for years as having diverticulitus. When this test hits the mainstream market, stuff like that won't happen much at all anymore.
It will also be great in that it can rule out cancer without a colonoscopy, because not all people can undergo those. It can also be used to screen people at risk for cancer without them undergoing a colonoscopy too often (not to mention it's more likely to catch something than the colonoscopy).
