I'm new to all this as I don't have IBS but my mom does. She also has Alzheimer. 3 wks ago she began to have a flare up. Before ibs always came with the diarrhea and constipation this time neither just PAIN. She can't hardly move. The doc gave her vicoden for the pain. no help but it did make her so loopy her assisted living home told me she couldn't stay there while she was taking vicoden because they where afraid she'd wonder away. So now shes passed out on my couch( vicoden makes her sleep). She's taken colazol(?) for a year since her last flare up. Now I see that it isn't suppose to be taken with Glipizide-Her diabetes med. The point to all this is Is all this pain really ibs and is it really untreatable and is it really going to go on for months? Her pain Is RLQ and when it's really bad in her back and down her right leg. The doc also gave her trammedal but it did squat.

How long has your mom had IBS?

They usally don't give vicodan long term for IBS.

Does she have pain flare ups often.

The brain is also involved in IBS symptoms, so that could be making it tough as well.

Have you talked to her doctor yourself?

Thank you for answering! Mom has had ibs for about 10 years. In the past always with bowel symptoms. Like I said this time-none.
She hasn't had a flare up in about a year.
I've talked to the Doctor repeatedly, Mom is not cognitive enough.
This morning she was crying when I got up because she hadn't had any vicoden for 8 hours and she couldn't get upstairs to wake me up.
I just can't believe the pain she is in and vicoden is the docs only answer

They need to put her in and do a ct scan or something to figure out why she is in that kind of pain. Could be appendicitis in the lower right. Does she have a fever? Also, they can give antidepressants for long term control along with probiotics and other things like benefiber. I understand the pain thing though but for me, usually one pain pill will stop my ibs in its tracks. She needs checking out for this kind of pain. I hope it turns out ok for her.

Moms in the hospital now on morphine and STILL in pain. they cannot figure it out. She is constipated but that is a more recent development and not the source. They've tried 5 different medications PLUS 2 enemas to get her going and as of last night no luck. I hope today brings some kind of relief. She has had another cat scan and the doc said all he saw was poop. He doesn't think shes obstructed but one would think there would be some movement. The pain is awful to watch. even on the morphine she is just writhing with it. Now the pain is in her back and both legs. I wondered yesterday if she might have fibromyalgia something else I know little on nothing about. Well off to the horsepistal (hospital) as my gramps used to say. Thanks again for responding
