I had my gallbladder removed 7 years ago. Have had diarrhea for years but just in the the last year or 2 it has become chronic. When they removed my gallbladder, they did a liver biopsy showing a fatty liver.
The lab tests showed normal stools. A total of 4 bood tests came out high and out of range. The first one was the Sedimentation rate (ESR) which is done along with the second test, a C-Reactive Protien. These show levels of inflammation nonspecific to body areas and both were high. The other 2 tests were for the liver which were AST and ALT. Both of these tests were slightly high (3-6 points over normal).
I originally had (and still do) have an upper GI scheduled for December 22. He has now added that I get an abdominal ultrasound done to look at the liver and now a colonoscopy on January 12th.
I have known about the fatty liver with it being enlarged since the gallbladder surgery years ago, so, the elevated AST and ALT levels are not surprising. However, the 2 blood tests that are detecting possible inflammation do just that, detect it but does not show it's cause or what part of the body is involved.
Has there been anyone here that has been diagnosed with IBD or IBS due to some of these blood tests? Also, advice on how to prepare and what to expect from an upper GI and a colonoscopy would be greatful
