IBS is a broad dx and chronic health condition. High fiber helps some of us, while low fiber helps others. Eliminating sugar and sweeteners is helpful to many.
The best I can suggest is to begin a food diary, I'd start with either high fiber (whole wheat products) and keep track of any GI upsets you experience. Or start with white bread and go from there.
I've posted my daily symptoms, etc. but my touchy gut seems to appreciate simple, low residue diet foods - about 75% of the time. I do enjoy fresh fruit but when I first started my LRD and keeping a food diary, my only fresh fruit were bananas (the rest was canned). Over time I could introduce fresh fruit.
I have read on these forums that artificial sweeteners should be avoided. From what I can gather, they cause nothing but trouble. An abundance of sugar can cause a lot of GI troubles too. Everything in moderation is probably a good rule of thumb to follow here - skip sodas, limit your sugar intake, and start that food diary. Hopefully over time you'll be able to determine if high fiber or low rifer foods agree with you.
Also, perhaps just a low dose of Metamucil or Citracel at bedtime might be what you need as well. My husband suffers from Diverticulosis and needs Metamucil a few times a week. He said it was very mild on his gut (I tried it and it gave me D for 2 days, so I crossed that product off my list of what to try).
